I have a Dell Inspiron laptop running Windows 7. Recently I have been having problems with audio, e.g. plugging in headphones doesn't cut the speakers. I've made changes in settings and now I want to reset the preferences.

What is the easiest way to do this? Is there something I need to uninstall and reinstall? If so, what? Do i need to reset the settings for Windows 7 or for the sound card? I have the IDT HD Sound sound card

Hi, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help,

Even with the newer sound systems, plugging in headphones into the jack socket still operates a switch which then cuts the speaker sound, if the switch within the jack socket has become worn or broken then the speakers will stay on.

No amount of setting changes will reverse that as it is a hardware problem.

The jack sockets need to be checked out first I am afraid.

Nev.
