How to Change the Default View in File/Open Window?

When I do a File/Open in a program, like Photoshop for example, it defaults

to the Thumbnail view. I would really prefer the List or Detail view

instead.

Is there a way to permanently change the default view upon using File/Open?

I don't think this is the same as the Folder View which remembers the last

settings that were used for each folder being opened.

TIA
