I was gonna suggest that but generally ( for Comcast near me anyways),

user needs to call ISP with MAC address for them to allow the hw onto

their network ( otherwise the hw seen as intruder).

Win XP says it is connected to the LAN, but will not go Online

I have four computers on a LAN but suddenly one will not go online.

I have turned every thing off, Modem, router, all four computers, for more

than ten minets. Then turn on the modem wait for all the lights to turn

green, then power on the router and wait for the green lights, then plug in

each cable one at a time and wait for the light to come on then the next

cable until all four are installed with lights on. Then turn on each

computer, making sure that it can go online before turning on the next one

and so on till all four are on.

I have tried changing to another port on the router with the computer that

won't go online. No Joy

Changed the NIC card to another PCI slot. Changed the NIC card for a known

working one. No Joy

Then swapped cables, still NO JOY!

What the Heck is it !?!

Also every time I did somthing, Windows still tells me it is connected.

Last night I saved what files I wanted, and wiped the hard drive clean, then

installed windows XP home edition, and It Still Does the Same Thing!!!

After reading all of that -to confirm: one pc doesn't work - period.

Anything happen on PC just prior to not working ?

When you display network properties,

NIC card shows enabled ?, firewalled ? etc

Click

Start- run -

type CMD , then hit enter

then type

ping 127.0.0.1

OK ?

type

ipconfig /all ( space between "g" and "/" )

Click in upper left of that window and choose

Edit - Select All

then

Same thing

Edit - now choose COPY.

reply to this message then click

PASTE

to show us the status.

During your testing did you ever try powering on only the affected computer

and see if it could then connect to the internet? If it works and now the

last one powered on can not connect it is time to check the range (number

of IP address) the router is presently configured to assign.

On one working and the affected computer try opening a Command window.

Start-Programs-Accessories-Command Prompt

Then issue the command ipconfig /all and see how they compare.

Do they both get assigned an IP address in the same subnet, DNS servers,

etc.?

Ok Bobb, 1. How would I reply to this message if the computer Will Not Go

Online?

2. I will try the ping and get back in a few.

3. I just did the 'ipconfig /all' and it came back with:

Windows IP Configuration:

Primary Dns Suffix= blank

Node Type= unknown

IP Routing Enabled=NO

WINS Proxy Enabled= NO

DNS Suffix Search list=domain

Now then the next part of the file lists the Ethernet Adapter, the correct

IP Address, Subnet Mask address, Physical Address, and Dhcp Enabled=yes

Re: Win XP says it is connected to the LAN, but will not go Online

Yes I tried it as the first computer on the first port, where as it was on

the forth. Then tried it on all the ports, still no joy.

Yes the working computers come up with all the correct info and enabled

items 'Enabled'.

It did work last week but had been turned off for about four days, and this

all started when it was powered on yesterday morning.

Ok, I did the ping and it came back with this:

Pinging 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 127.0.0.1=bytes 32 time<1ms TTL =128> [this line was listed four

times]

Ping Statistics for 127.0.0.1

Packets sent=4

Received=4

Lost=0 <0% loss>

Aproximate round trip times in Milli-Seconds:

Minimum=0ms, Maximum=0ms, Average=0ms

I personally have no idea what this all means.

Replacing network adapters or reloading Windows is equivalent to

flailing your arms: Lots of energy spent but nothing gained. Lets

approach this in a systematic step-by-step manner. Take the following

steps on the problem PC and also on one that does work:

- Connect a USB flash disk to the PC.

- Click Start / Run.

- Type the three letters cmd in the box and click OK.

- Type these commands:

ipconfig /all > c:\%ComputerName%.txt {Enter}

copy c:\%ComputerName%.txt X:\

(Replace "X" with the correct flash disk drive letter)

When finished, connect the flash disk to your current PC.

Open the two files you created and paste them into your

reply. Mark each of them clearly so that we know which

one comes from the problem machine.

Launch "My Computer" and open the two

Sorry, not well off enough to own a USB Flash disk. But I will copy all info

Re: Win XP says it is connected to the LAN, but will not go Online

Where I live a 1 GByte flash disk costs around US$10.00.

A floppy disk would do too, or the chip of a digital camera.

do you have nic icon in systray ? click on it - any network traffic ?

Does event log show anything ?

re: "the correct IP address" :

so as you change ports, the IP address changes ? ( just checking not fixed

and conflicting)

Plug this bad Pc into port one of router

open internet browser and type

192.168.1.1 hit 'enter'

Now see router menu ? prompt ?

Great - you're making it down the wire:not a hardware problem.and now can

see settings. That will vary by router.

Exit router power off

Unplug all other pc from router

off/on with just this pc - internet OK ?

See no menu ?

You say you wiped PC and problem follows PC.

Look at device manager any " !" 's on devices - or any 'OTHER" items

listed ?

IRQ conflicts ?

BIOS settings ?

==================

Compare bad PC info to one of your "good PC's".

I'll show you mine and explanations

==================

Do ipconfig /all " ( no quotes) on 2 of your PC's and compare good pc to

bad pc . You said you have router so all IP address should start with

192.168.x.y if you chose default. ( Note: I have things disabled I do

not need so if mine is different just note it in reply. Also your ISP may

vary but just compare your 2 pc's for differences). using Google to find

network troubleshooting tips, on good pc: compare to bad pc :

Good PC

start-run-cmd

type

Ping http://www.yahoo.com

note the address numbers returned

lets say numbers = 44.55.66.77 for now

now do it on bad pc

if it fails

ping 44.55.66.77.

If THAT works its a DNS issue , etc

What makes you think that the OP's router is on 192.168.1.1?

While this is a popular factory default, it can be just about

anything. Let's not confuse the poster by assuming things -

let's get some facts first, then recommend a few tests that

are based on the results of these tests!

Hello,

Plenty of good suggestions.

Remove the router and the other computers and use a direct connection from

the modem to the problem computer.

And if he doesn't then he'll be more confused than before.

Much better to find out the router's address first - the

working PCs will tell him what it is.

Re: Win XP says it is connected to the LAN, but will not go Online

Ok, tried that once but the USB disk I got ($45 was the cheap one, AZ) would

only work with a 2.0 USB port, our computers are a bit older, and I don't

have a digital camera.

But did find the info that 'ipconfig /all' gave me was more than I can

understand, and will post it all some time today. The wife had to work a

second shift, she's a Nurse, so I get to watch the kids.

Tried that this morning but did the same thing, then tried all the others

after that and they work just fine, each and every one!!! This has gone from

frustrating to thinking about pulling the memory and hard drive out, then

taking it outside and killing it with a Very Large Hammer. But, I can't do

that, somebody would call the law and I would get in trouble for 'Disturbing

the Peace'. (But I Can Dream!!!)

Yes we had to do that when we first set it up March of last year (Qwest &

DTV) and was told we could have one to six computers on the same line with no

problems, and we have had no problems till now.

Re: Win XP says it is connected to the LAN, but will not go Online

If you're familiar with router setup, did you try my note from a few days

ago ... try 192.168.1.1 ( substitute your router menu setup page address)

from bad pc to router while plugged into port 1 ?

Event log - show anything ?

Can you ping this pc from others ?

vice versa ?

do you see traffic on nic counters ?

Firewall off ?

nic config - Client for Microsoft Windows ?

go down the list from network troubleshooting link in my last note

Compare between this BAD pc and one of your GOOD pc's.

Re: Win XP says it is connected to the LAN, but will not go Online

I Have JOY JOY JOY!!! But with help from an unlikly source. What it was

amazed even me! My eleven year old grand daughter asked me, "Why don't you go

into the 'Administrative Tools' and make sure every thing is set to Enabled?

Ok, what the heck, I'll let her feel like she's helping.

Would you belive it, Anything, and Everything, that had to do with the DNS,

DHCP, Browser, HTTP, IP Services, Network DDE, ect. ect. ect. was either

Disabled or set to Manual!! Now I know what your thinking, but she hasn't

been near the dang thing since I took it in my work room and did the back-up

of the files I wanted to keep and wiped the HDD clean with WD software.

So I had to ask, "How the heck did you come up with that idea?"

Two words 'Summer School'.

She had had some problems with 'Math' last year, so we Made her go. So to

make it short, when the teacher was showing them how to do math skills on the

computer using a White-Board, Windows XP went nuts and would not let the

White-Board work. So, the math class that day turned into computer 101 and

while everyone watched, gathered around the teacher, She fixed the problem,

and the last thing she did was go into the 'Administrative Tools'_'Services

(Local)' and ENABLE then START everything that had to do with the white-Board.

Needless to say I was speechless when after re-starting the system the Dang

thing works just fine!!!

GrandPa and GrandMa were so pleased we took her to her favorite place, the

Mall today and gave her $20, then followed her, at a distance, for two hours.

Thanks to Everyone for all the help, I for one learned a lot from this,

Problem.

Thanks From us All,

Michael,Debra,Rebekka,Cody, and of course 'Our Computer Nerd' Brandee :-))
