Pozzouk Posted September 20, 2011 Author Posted September 20, 2011 Cheers Ken Seems i still have a problem or two - In "Device Manager" i have a question mark against "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" and if i run a checker such as "Easy Driver Pro" i'm informed that the "System Interrupt Controller" has gone missing. All in all no sound, must have spent all day scouring the net and even installed the only chipset drivers and sound drivers available from the super ambiguous Packad Bell site. I live in hope that this makes sence - sorry to be a pain - this is getting longer than the Forsyte Saga!!! Pozzouk. PS. Will check first thing and then working till late, so may be tomorrow evening before i get back to this......Thanks again for your help. Quote

Pozzouk Posted September 22, 2011 Author Posted September 22, 2011 I sure hope so but the motherboard you suggest is not the one i'm affraid. Seems like i have the Packard Bell "BV Cuba MS - 7301" - with a "socket775 Intel D - Also printed on the board but not showing when tested are in big letters "MSI N996". When running various tests on the machine it seems i have the model "Imedia 2470" or alternatively a "5070" I suspect it's the former. Chipset model "P4M890" - the nearest i could find on the PB site was a "P4M800pro" download offering, so eventually i went for it as no other option apparent. Sound from PB was also "P4M800pro" again nothing exactly matching my numbers but the only one available. Graphics are "Gforce 7300 SE/7200" seemingly solved by nvidia drivers. The CPU is a D820 Smithfield 90mn Technology. The Bios is "Phoenix W7301 VP2.027" 10/27/2006. The only other numbers showing when tested by "SIW" were - Serial No.1224226390319 and a version PB3438701. I hope this helps in my quest to solve the mystery of the System Interrupt Controller not forgetting lack of sound. Regards Pozzouk. Quote
KenB Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 Just on the P-Bell site. How much RAM do you have? Apparently with 4GB RAM on that Cuba m/board XP will not detect the chipset. Windows does not detect the audio chipset on desktops shipped with a Cuba motherboard and 4 GB RAM memory installed. EDIT: Try the drivers here: http://download.cnet.com/Audio-Realtek-ALC888-HD-Audio-Driver-Version-A01/3000-2110_4-168836.html I found a guy with the same problem - same m/board and OS - this solved his sound problem. Give this a try :) If this fails - Take a look at the m/board again. Is "Biostar" written anywhere ? Pozzouk Posted September 23, 2011 Author Posted September 23, 2011 I'm pleased to see it sorted and the thread reopened. As it happens, that "Dell" driver has sorted the sound, thank the Lord or should i say Ken! But how on earth can it be right that Packard Bell can be allowed be so obtrusive. The PC in question is not much older than four years, it is of no great cost to them to make the drivers available for at least ten years, or for that matter longer!!!! That would be the sort of company one would look to do business with. The truth is these manufacturers want these machines obselete before you even get them home - it is simply disgusting. So with any luck when the search engines home in on what to expect from such a shower they will get to find this - it's no wonder when one visits the local tip that they are over run with what appear to be perfectly good PC's. I seem to remember that this thread actually started in an attempt to find a set of what i considered to be motherboard drivers - i presume there should be such a set somewhere Yes/No? Anyhow for fear of going on to far i see to date that this thread has been visited 554 times as i write! So i hope that when some other poor soul encounters such grief that at least some answers to their problem will appear from within. As for Ken, >"tearful mode on"< only joking! None of the above would have come to pass without your help "Cheers Pal" I was never so pleased in all my days to hear that ruddy Windows signing off tune as i shut the machine down. That racket is always the first kill after a reinstal. Unfortunately, last night i was out of Champaign, so was stuck with a couple of bottles of "Wells Banana Beer" to cellebrate - all the better as the missus went to bed and i had to drink the lot. So next stop, i still have to get into the drive that started this lot off, at least for now i can turn from one drive to the other and the family have their Computer back in action rather than the blue screen of death. Sorry long but neccessary, ATB Pozzouk. PS. No sign of the words Biostar to be seen. Quote

Pozzouk Posted September 24, 2011 Author Posted September 24, 2011 I guess that just about does it - although i never did discover where i should get a package of motherboard drivers for the Imedia 2470. Also see below >>>>>Chipset model "P4M890" - the nearest i could find on the PB site was a "P4M800pro" download offering, so eventually i went for it as no other option apparent. My last question is: That if the sound drivers as above from Packard Bell were no use - What might the chipset drivers that appear to be from the same genre be upto - i don't think they can be correct. Any ideas???? Pozzouk. Quote

VIA drivers are here: http://www.via.com.tw/en/support/drivers.jsp As your m/board is an old one the driver from 2004 may do the job http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/4in1/via_hyperion%204%20in%201_v453v.zip Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Pozzouk Posted September 26, 2011 Author Posted September 26, 2011 What a cool mover........Sooooooo sophisticated ;o)) We got there in the end Just one thing!!!! Should i ever successfully get back into that previous drive - and manage to get the recovery process to complete would one need to run the service packs having run the recovery "R" repair???? Just a thought. Pozzouk. Quote
KenB Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 would one need to run the service packs having run the recovery "R" repair???? Yes. The Recovery would take the system back to factory settings - in other words what was on the system when you bought it. It may have come with Service Pack 2 installed as this was released in 2004 but you would need to install SP3. Pozzouk Posted September 26, 2011 Author Posted September 26, 2011 Hmm, As it happens i set the disc running with XP Home about four years ago but not on the Packard Bell machine to start with - so that might have something to do with the failure of the recovery consul to sort out Windows. Whatever, in my ignorance I'm pretty certain as certain can be that when i set it going with my XP 2002 disc that i never put service pack one on there - Just two followed by three and the regular updates. Still for the time being i have a shiny new version on the new drive so for the moment i will leave well alone. ATB Pozzouk. PS. Is there an updated version of "windows live onecare" to be had anywhere or similar????? Quote
KenB Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 ........ XP 2002 disc that i never put service pack one on there I remember now - we covered this earlier in the thread. If the SP is less than 1a ( or no service pack ) then you need to start with SP1 or 1a then install SP2 > SP3. i will leave well alone. This would be my advice. Is there an updated version of "windows live onecare" to be had anywhere It is not available any longer. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909848 Take a look here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security_essentials/default.aspx I use this. It is free. Your installation of XP would need to be a legal one as Essentials checks. Avira is good too. http://www.avira.com/en/for-home There is a free version. You should not use the web if you don't have an up-to-date AV. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Pozzouk Posted September 27, 2011 Author Posted September 27, 2011 Your installation of XP would need to be a legal one as Essentials checks. Good heavens - you're not suggesting that i would break the law are you Ken??? - trust me I'm a builder!!! LoL. All legit here. As for the anti-virus - i've been using Avast for a while - seems to work fine - it just makes the missus jump when she is cooking the dinner and watching East Enders (I hate the programme) when it suddenly announces that it has updated - i'm sure there must be a way to turn that off. Thanks for the Advice, Pozzouk. Quote
KenB Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Good heavens - you're not suggesting that i would break the law are you Ken??? Not at all. Starbuck said that to me when he recommended Essentials. (I hate the programme) Essentials just runs in the background - no adverts - no noises ........... You can't have 2 AVs on the system - they will conflict. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Pozzouk Posted September 28, 2011 Author Posted September 28, 2011 (I hate the programme) Just to be sure - it is eAST eNDERS that i despise! - why the missus cannot where headphones i don't know. As for that other old drive i want to get into (that started this thread) i still have the remains of the system it once belonged to so i'm going to attempt the recovery consul with the drive back in it's old body...........Almost Frankenstein! Thanks for the recommends Ken. Pozzouk Quote

Pozzouk Posted September 28, 2011 Author Posted September 28, 2011 Best of luck with the monster :) Pardon the irony - i genuinely thought you were referring to the missus for a moment (Tin Hat On) good lob she's skinny! Perhaps if i gave her a reboot she'd stop watching such screaming rubbish? For fear of using up the servers entire capacity i suspect this really is the end of the thread unless anyone can tell me how to stop her (perhaps it's a software problem)??? Many thanks for all the help i've had - donation in the offing. Best regards, Pozzouk. Quote

Plastic Nev Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Being a simple sort of guy, I assume you mean to turn off the voice over when Avast updates, and you don't want to turn off the missus. :D I haven't tried this, but I think this is the way to turn that voice over off. Open the main Avast panel, then click settings, select sounds, at the bottom is a tick box for "Use voice over sounds, (when available)" remove the tick and see if the voice over has gone at the next update.
