windows cannot determine user or computer name - refers to windows 2000 server

Recommended Posts

I have some serious issues with our windows 2000 server.

it is a domain controller, out 2003 server is the PDC with the FSMO roles.

it appears the 2000 server is no longer able to replicate with the 2003

server as per below:

Event Type: Error

Event Source: Userenv

Event Category: None

Event ID: 1000

Date: 7/18/2008

Time: 4:59:56 PM

User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

Computer: mywindows2000server

Description:

Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. Return value

(-2146893022).

here are the results for dcdiag:

Performing initial setup:

Done gathering initial info.

Doing initial required tests

Testing server: Default-First-Site-Name\mywindows2003server

Starting test: Connectivity

......................... mywindows2003server passed test

Connectivity

Doing primary tests

Testing server: Default-First-Site-Name\mywindows2003server

Starting test: Replications

[Replications Check,mywindows2003server] A recent replication

attempt failed:

From mywindows2000server to mywindows2003server

Naming Context: CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=mydomain,DC=com

The replication generated an error (8456):

The source server is currently rejecting replication requests.

The failure occurred at 2008-07-19 10:52:51.

The last success occurred at 2008-05-24 07:47:13.

1323 failures have occurred since the last success.

Replication has been explicitly disabled through the server

options.

Active Directory doesnt work from the 2000 server, when I try to open AD

from the 2000 server it says:

naming information cannot be located becasuse the target principal name is

not correct

What do I need to do to fix this? If it was just another XP machine I read

that I could move it to a workgroup then add it back to the domain to fix

the event ID 1000 error, but this is a 2000 server that is a domain

controller.

Would you demote it then do dcpromo?

Yes,

I would demote it, and then follow the instructions carefully for adding a

new domain controller, especially regarding DNS.

Re: windows cannot determine user or computer name - refers to windows 2000 server

Hello Gary,

If the server is not important and only for redundancy, the easiest way is

to demote it and promote it again. But the question is, what is the reason

for the replication problem. Maybe it occurs again. Can you post an unedited

ipconfig /all so that we can exclude DNS problem. Also post a complete dcdiag,

netdiag and repadmin /showrepl.

Best regards

Re: windows cannot determine user or computer name - refers to windows 2000 server

well, I wouldnt say it was entirley unimportant, as it is our WSUS server,

and hosts the corp antivirus management software, and a few printers are

shared off of it.

but as long as the other servers are running I am okay networking wise.

if demoting it and promoting it back would work I am fine with that, but I

am willing to look at anything to resolve this.

here are the results from the test you suggested (I did notice something

about inbound replication being disabled, and simply running the repadmin

option, it couldnt be that simple could it?)

Re: windows cannot determine user or computer name - refers to windows 2000 server

Hello Gary,

Did you run the commands to correct replication? If not do it, either you

will get an error, or it should start.

Make sure that the 2000 DC can ping all other DC's with ip address, comuptername

and FQDN.

Check if the \\domainname\netlogon is accessible and c:\winnt\sysvol folder

exists and that you can access it to the deepest level.

Running WSUS on a DC is not the best solution. Better run it on a memeber

server. A DC should only do it basic work as AD/DNS/GC and DHCP if used.

Please post also an unedited ipconfig /all from the 2003 server. You have

also a DNS server in another subnet 192.168.30.10 ? Is that also a DC?

Also have a deeper look into this articles, because some errors are also

in your outputs:

I've made the point in several ngs that a DC doesn't require lot of

resources. If it's a second DC, you could get by (until you can get

funds for a "real" server) with a decent workstation.

Re: windows cannot determine user or computer name - refers to windows 2000 server

one question:

the windows 2000 server I am demoting is a global catalog server (but not

the only one, the 2003 server is also), should I remove it from being a

global catalog server before I demote it, or does it not matter?
