troberts Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 I've always been able to burn CD-r's with no problem, but recently i've been having trouble. The software detects the blank and analyzes each file like normal, but as soon as the "Writing to disk" begins is when i receive the error message saying, "Windows Media Player could not complete burning because the disc is not compatible with your drive. Try inserting a different kind of recordable media or use a disc that supports a write speed that is compatible with your drive." I've previously burned hundreds of discs w/ this computer using the very same brand of blanks so i'm a little confused. First i thought it was the CD-r's maybe a bad batch, so i went out and bought another package from a different brand, no luck. Then i figured it must be WM Player, so I tried I-tunes to no avail. At this point i'm very frustrated and tired of wasting CD's, some advice is all i ask for. Thanks for reading Quote
RandyL Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Hi and welcome. Have you looked in device manager to see if it's showing any errors with the drive? There shouldn't be a problem with cd-r so I'm going to assume the problem exists with all cd's. I'm also going to assume that this is a cd/dvd combo drive that can also burn dvd's. Are you able to burn a dvd? Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. troberts Posted September 16, 2011 Author Posted September 16, 2011 It is the combo drive but I've never actually burned a DVD so i'm not sure, but I highly doubt it would work at this point. And I apologize for the misconception, i currently running on Windows Vista so proceed if needed to move the thread to that section. Quote
RandyL Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Go to your run box and type devmgmt.msc Look in your optical drive section there to see if any problems are flagged. There is a good reason to try a dvd. You can burn a dvd data disk just like a cd data disk. On a combo drive it might be that just the cd portion has gone bad. As I understand it they use two different lasers. So if you can make a dvd data disk but not a cd data disk then that would point to a faulty drive. So many are made cheap and many of them often do fail. I've replaced quite a few and some had not even been used much. Quote We are all members helping other members. KenB Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 I'm with Randy on this one. There are 2 lasers and the one for burning CDs may well be damaged. Try burning a DVD as suggested. troberts Posted September 16, 2011 Author Posted September 16, 2011 It's saying my drivers are up to date and are functioning properly. Quote
KenB Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 The drivers may well be up to date and functioning - but we suspect the hardware has a laser fault. If you can burn DVDs and not CDs then the problem invariably lies with the laser that burns the CDs. One thing you can try is to delete the Upper and Lower Filters from the Registry. I suggest that you create a Restore Point first before you do any work on the registry. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/Create-a-restore-point This link shows in great detail how to delete the Filters. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/driverssupport/ss/upperfilters-lowerfilters-sbs.htm Please be careful editing the Registry. If you are unsure - ask. You still need to try burning a DVD if this doesn't work.
