I am try to convert ntfs to fat32 which I've always had success with

with partition magic. Now the computer drops out of PM with an error 1517. I

looked at the events and Userenv has that code. What should I do ?

Not sure if this is going to help, but read Symantec's response to this.

I'll say the obvious, you know NTFS is better than fat32.

Google also returned a reference to not running it as a guest. I guess

it was trying to imply use an admin account.

Yeah but linux doesn't read or write to ntfs. I convert to ntfs to

defrag then convert to fat32. A file attribute is missing. Yes that's the

error I get but chkdsk doesn't help.

See if this helps:

"Error 1517: Required file attribute missing (EA3905ED)"

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/powerquest.nsf/14b83717f88cabd988256e970047ceab/7e5bfd9daaf056ca88256e75007cbc41?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam

If chkdsk /f does not fix the problem after running it once, try running it 3 to

4 times total.

Which version of Linux? I thought that they had taken care of that problem

at least three years ago. Various releases claim NTFS capability.

This hasn't been true for about three years. You may need to update your

Linux release.

I have a very hard time believing that "linux doesn't read or write to NTFS"

when there are so many Linux-based NT/XP password reset utilities.

These simply could *not* work without the ability to read from AND write to

NTFS.

Also, if you boot an XP/NTFS system from a Ubuntu boot disk, you can use

Ubuntu's file managers to access the NTFS disk.

You may have a problem with some versions of the *Mac* OS and writing to

NTFS; it's been a while since I tried this.

Good Lord!

You convert to NTFS to run a defrag program, then convert back to FAT32 so

you can run Linux?

Please tell me you have some complicated, but believable, reason for this

seeming silliness ("I enjoy it" is an example).

Yes, the NTSF-3g driver has full read/write functionallity. I have been

using it without any problems for a while now. Although, I have noticed a

few bugs when KDE tries to work with an NTFS partition.

BTW, OP, there are EXT drivers for Windows that will allow you to access an

EXT2/3 partition by mounting it as an EXT2 parition. But, since EXT2 lacks

journalling, it's basically the same tradeoff as choosing FAT32 over NTFS.

Contact the makers of Partition Magic for assistance with their

product. This isn't a Windows issue.

It's an old RH9 version. I do have fedora though. I didn't know they

fixed it.
