Guest AAH Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 My computer is not loaded with heavy duty stuff and to this the Win386.swp file has been around 100MB. It is gradually increasing for about last two months and average around 250MB. The total contents of my C: drive/partition are only 3.25GB. and D: partition's are 17.8GB backup store. The total capacity of the HD is 36.1 GB. 256 MB Extended memory. Is there anything I can do to reduce the page file size?
Guest Mike M Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 Re: WinMe - Win386.SWP If this really worries you, it's not something that I'd be worrying about, you can limit the size of the swap file as follows Control Panel | System | Performance | Virtual Memory and check "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings". My Win Me system (128MB RAM) runs with a VM around 100MB immediately after booting when doing nothing with the size of the VM increasing as I open and use applications, especially those working with largish graphics files. -- Mike Maltby mike.maltby@gmail.com AAH <aah@chakcomnet.net> wrote: > My computer is not loaded with heavy duty stuff and to > this the Win386.swp file has been around 100MB. > It is gradually increasing for about last two months and > average around 250MB. > The total contents of my C: drive/partition are only > 3.25GB. and D: partition's are 17.8GB backup store. > The total capacity of the HD is 36.1 GB. > 256 MB Extended memory. > Is there anything I can do to reduce the page file size?

I don't recall what the upper limit is that Windows Me automatically sets for a pagefile; I do recall reading that around 1.5 to 2.5 times your physical RAM capacity is a good upper limit. So, if you have 128MB of RAM, a pagefile between 192MB and 320MB is about right. -- Norman ~Shine, bright morning light, ~now in the air the spring is coming. ~Sweet, blowing wind, ~singing down the hills and valleys.
