That was a good description of the problem. This usually occurs when you

have too many programs/processes running in the background and you are

running out of system resources. The programs/processes could be legitimate

(like running a bloated and invasive antivirus program from Norton or

McAfee) or they could be malware (viruses and spyware). It could also be

caused by a failing video card (hardware).

Unfortunately, you forgot to tell us anything about your computer -

make/model, processor speed, amount of RAM (memory). You also forgot to

tell us whether the problem has always been there or if it is something

new.

So, the first thing to do to narrow down the troubleshooting is to answer

The First and Second Questions of Troubleshooting:

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things

worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus

status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and

versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

If you don't understand that and/or need more help, then please post back

with more details about your computer and at least the answer to The First

Question and what antivirus/security programs you have installed.

Perhaps the person who did this for you forgot to get the latest video

drivers from the video card mftr.'s website. You need to know what video

card you've got and then do that. You will uninstall the current drivers

and install the latest ones. If you want further help, you'll need to go

into Device Manager (or look at any documentation "the guy" gave you) and

post the exact make/model of the new video card.

In Device Manager, expand the Display Adapters category by clicking on the

cross next to the category. The make/model of the video card you have will

be shown.

Go to this link and download the top display driver bundle, the one for Rage

128/Rage 128 PRO. Save it somewhere you will find it, like on your Desktop.

http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/legacy-xp.html

Then install it. If you can't figure it out, ask a knowledgeable friend

(someone who is really knowledgeable and not just saying he is) or take the

machine to A DIFFERENT GUY. The "guy" you used installed a cr*p obsolete

video card and forgot to install the drivers. Use a competent local

professional computer repair shop instead. I don't suggest using a

BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place.

Now, this may not solve your issue but you most definitely should have

better device drivers installed. It it doesn't fix the problem, then you

need to look elsewhere for the cause. Based on your posts, I really think

you will be best off taking the machine to someone who knows what s/he is

doing. I say this not to offend you in any way, but simply to be practical.
