First login attempts usually close right away, clues as to why?

I log in to a remote windows 2003 server a couple of times a day using a

saved rdp file. Sometimes the first and second trys seem to succeed (I

see the desktop color) but then a 'closing' message flahes briefly and

I'm out. I always get in completely if I try 2-3-4 times in a row. This

kind of behavior is not consistent, comes in waves. It does not seem to

be very related to # of users logged in, usually <10. Just hoping this

has been seen before and has a typical cause that I can look in to.

Have you looked to see if prior sessions have not logged off completely yet?

It almost sounds like your picking up an existing session and watching it

log off.

That was my first thought too; but I always log off, and never

disconnect. Even if I did forget once in a while, it couldn't account

for the regularity (not completely regular but pretty common).

Here's an experiment I just tried.

Log on as user 1, it logs me off right away.

Log on as user 1, I get in all the way.

I see that there are no disconncted users. user 1 is already logged on

(ts here allows more than one logon at a time). Log off as user 1.

Log on as user 2, I get in all the way. User 2 was not logged in. Log

off as user 2.

Log on as user 3, it logs me off right away.

Log on as user 3, it logs me off right away again.

Log on as user 3, I get in all the way. I see user 3 was already logged

in but inactive for 50 minutes. Log off as user 3.

Log on as user 2, it logs me off right away.

Log on as user 2, I get in all the way.

I can't see any pattern.
