Guest baxterdown Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Program processes are not closing when I close a program. When I try to launch the program again later, it will not launch until I kill the process that never closed. This is happening with: - Outlook 2007 - Word 2007 - Excel 2007 - Photoshop CS3 - InDesign CS3 - Yahoo Widget Engine Sometimes when I go back to kill a process for a program above, I find two and three instances of them running. I'm on XP SP3. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this? Be sure the computer is clean: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! FAQ - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/#FAQ
Guest baxterdown Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Re: Processes won't end. Help! Hi Malke, thanks for the reply. I didn't mention this in my original post, but the problem is happening in all 4 of my computers. I have a small graphic design shop with three PC's at the office and I have a laptop at home. The problem is happening in all of the machines. - The only thing that has changed between the time things worked and now are automatic Windows Updates. I have not installed and/or removed any programs. - All four machines are 100% free of any malware and/or viruses. I run Norton 360 v2 on all of them and keep it up to date. Additionally, I do not visit questionable websites of any kind and monitor closely where my staff goes online. I am confident to say that all four machines are clean. Guest baxterdown Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Re: Processes won't end. Help! I chatted with Symantec Tech support as someone else had mentioned that the problem is caused by the "Symantec Event Manager" service on Norton 360. Here's what they said: Khangenbam(Tue Jul 22 09:01:46 EDT 2008)>Jose, this issue is known issue to Symantec and our research team is working on this issue. Khangenbam(Tue Jul 22 09:03:09 EDT 2008)>The new patch will be release through the LiveUpdate of the Norton program when the resolution is found out. Mr. Jose(Tue Jul 22 11:55:39 EDT 2008)>Do you have an estimated time for resolution? Khangenbam(Tue Jul 22 09:04:44 EDT 2008)>Jose, I will not be able to tell you estimated time. Since we do not get the exact estimated time from the research team. But, do not worry. It will not take long time. Mr. Jose (Tue Jul 22 11:57:30 EDT 2008)>Ok Khangenbam, thank you for your assistance. Have a nice day. Khangenbam(Tue Jul 22 09:05:34 EDT 2008)>You are most welcome. So, there you have it! Yes, that would have been very helpful to have known. If the only thing that has changed is that you installed Windows Updates, uninstall the updates and test. If the problem is gone, install the updates one at a time to find out which is the culprit. If you don't see the updates in Add/Remove Programs, check the box at the top that says "Show Updates". You can also get free support for update issues. Just another of the many reasons I haven't recommended any Norton products since 2003. Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! FAQ - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/#FAQ
Guest Design3r Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Re: Processes won't end. Help! Have you received any updates since July on this issue? I've been searching all over the internet and did speak with Symantic once about it and they didn't know what the problem was. I had a good feeling that it was Norton 360 causing my computer to do the same. Thanks for the good news that they are at least working on it!
