Exclude files in Serach

Is there a way to get the Search feature to exclude certain file types?

My searches get stuck when they run into Acronis True Image backup files (*.tib)

I'm thinking that serach is treating them like folders but it just keeps running

(or hangs) for hours.

Do not put (*.tib) in the search field. I have no idea how you get this extension in your search result when you are searching unless you put it in there.

Howdy,

I am not the OP, but I have the same experience...

The *.TIB files do not appear in the search result.

The search proceeds, but at some point displays a message

that an "archive cannot be opened" and hangs.

So, the OP (and I) would be interested in some way to tell

the Search function to look for "XYZ" but skip over any file

with the extension TIB (so that it won't hang.)

Thanks for any help,

Thanks for the clarification

And I just noticed that I don't know how to spell "search"

It bust be a type of retardation that I did it twice :-\

If I get a reply from Acronis I'll post it hear. I'm sure they'll fix it

eventually . . .

How about turning off the ability to search in compressed files? Are

those compressed?

Sorry if this is a multiple send: Guess I typed with my palms.

I KNOW there is a way to set this in XP but darned if I can find it now

I want it!

If you're comfortable with using Regedit, this will accomplish it too:

---------------------

Click Start; Run and type the following:

Regsvr32 c:\Windows\System32\zipfldr.dll /u

(careful, watch out for the spaces)

Conversely, you can change back to including compressed folders in your

searches using the above command but without the /u switch.

---------------------

I know it says "zip,,, .dll" but it applies to any compressed file that

XP is capable of looking into; I just tested it on a .cab file to be

certain.

If I can refind how to do it from Control Panel in a reasonable time

I'll post back with that.

Looks like this is about the best I can do right now for this issue:

One reason why Windows Vista's Search tool is so fast is because, rather

than searching your whole hard disk, it only searches the Documents

folders. So the next time that you pull up Windows XP's Search

Companion, click All Files And Folders and select My Documents in the

Look In drop-down list. This prevents the Search Companion from

searching the entire hard disk.

If you want to search documents stored in the root folder, you can still

speed up the process by removing system folders from the search. Click

All Files And Folders, open the More Advanced Options panel, and clear

the Search System Folders check box. If the Search Hidden Files And

Folders check box is selected, clear it too.

If you have a lot of ZIP files (or compressed folders, as Windows XP

calls them) on your hard disk, the Search Companion will search through

each of those as well, albeit more slowly. To prevent the Search

Companion from searching through compressed folders, either move all

your compressed folders to the root folder and then configure the Search

Companion to only search the My Documents folder, or disable Windows

XP's support for compressed folders.

To disable this support, access the Run dialog box, type the command

regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll in the Open text box and click OK. You'll then

need to restart the system for the change to take effect. (To re-enable

Windows XP's support for compressed folders, use the command regsvr32

zipfldr.dll.)

What if the Search Companion is disabled?

If you've disabled Windows XP's Search Companion interface and are using

the Windows 2000 Search interface instead, you'll need to make the

following adjustments to this tip:

a.. To search My Documents, select My Documents in the Look In

drop-down list.

b.. To remove system folders from the search, click Search Options,

select the Advanced Options check box, and then clear the Search System

Folders check box. (If the Search Hidden Files And Folders check box is

selected, clear it too.)

To prevent the searching of compressed folders, you can use the same

technique as you would for the Search Companion.

Note: This tip applies to both Windows XP Home and Windows XP

Professional. Also remember that editing the registry is risky; so be

sure you've performed a full backup before making any changes.

Re: Exclude files in Serach

Thanks, I found this same thing on Annoyances.org and it does work for ..zip and

..cab files but not for .tib files. It searches inside of them anyway and then

either hangs or gets a runtime error.

I guess I'll just have to quit searching my E: Drive or change the file

extention on these backup files to .cab
