Guest Eric Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Does anyone have any suggestions on what wrong it is? When I start Win 98, after it shows win 98 logo, then a mark keeps flashing forever. When I reset it and select safe mode, the win 98 is able to start. Does anyone havea any suggestions on what wrong it is? Thanks in advance for any suggestions Eric
Guest Jeff Richards Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Re: Cannot start 98 As you have confirmed that you can start in safe mode, the process will involve determining the component that is causing the problem. See here for a description of how to disable startup items and then add them back progressively to determine the problem one. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192926 How to Perform Clean-Boot Troubleshooting for Windows 98 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q188867 Troubleshooting Windows 98 Startup Problems http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nunt.nsf/docid/1998429102510&src=w How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 98 -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Eric" <Eric@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:73EA24FC-E428-4F66-A239-CA1C80164E76@microsoft.com... > Does anyone have any suggestions on what wrong it is? > When I start Win 98, after it shows win 98 logo, then a mark keeps > flashing > forever. When you get in safe mode, lower the resolution. Go all the way down if you have to, to 640X480 - 256 colors. Then see if it will boot normally. You can always set the resolution back to higher resolution later. Not hard to change. If you are not sure how, go to Control Panel / Display One other thing, disable all screen savers. Those frikkin things can cause all sorts of problems. (which is why I never use them). Also disable all power management stuff. ------ Wanna have some real fun, change your font color to the same color as your background color. You wont see any text until you smoke some weed.
