Setup stalls but keeps trying to start again on top of itself???

I am trying to do an upgrade install of XP SP2 over 98SE. I need to do this

for time concerns as the machine has far too much software to reload.

If I boot to the CD, it tells me it can't find a previous version of

Windows, so...

I start 98 and then put in the CD. Setup asks 'what would you like to do'

and I tell it to upgrade as it reccommends (would have chose that option

anyhow). It would get to the end of 'analyzing machine' and stall... but

then I would get the 'what would you like to do' screen again while set up

is already running, errrr stalled! Once I clicked it for the heck of it and

eventually got a 'this service is already running' or something to that

effect.

One time I gave it a three finger salute and stopped everything but systray

and explorer and it made it as far as the end of 'copying installation

files' but then stalled there, too... until the 'what do you want to do'

nonsense started again.

I'm very short on time and may or may not get to look at this again today or

tonight but maybe not until tomorrow or who knows, so any suggestions that

might speed this up would be greatly appreciated.

Upgrades of win98 to XP are often problematic,

they typically have problems.(I'd go so far as to say they *usually* don't

work properly)

The best thing to do is backup your data and perform a fresh install of XP.

Even if it takes you a week to reinstall all your apps, that will save you a

lot of time

trying to fix all the problems likely to be found.

Here is a good compromise:

Either use a third party utility and repartition your drive,

or add a second harddrive, then perform a clean install of XP

on a second partition. Then dual boot.

You can then start installing your apps over on the XP side,

and even if it takes you weeks to get XP all setup and configured,

you can still run your original win98 installation

I know of many machines with straight upgrades that run just fine.

That said... I have multi-boots on most of these machines. Right now, I do

not have weeks to invest and need this one done ASAP.

Thanks though.

I suppose you could run msconfig and take everything out of startup,

reboot and try again...

but my guess is the upgrade will leave you with an unstable system.

My advise still stands to opt for a clean install
