service packs

I am having difficulty adding a few components to my computer. I have XP

and had it up to SP3. I have cleaned things by unistalling and removing

through Add/Remove. Included in this were all the updates along the way

over the past five years.

For example in trying to add fax service, it is asking for my CD of SP3. I

don't have that, only the original CD. I am guessing that I may have

deleted some important files in previous updates. Should I be going to

Microsoft's website to reinstall updates that go all the way back? Should I

reinstall SP3 or even go to SP2 and then SP3.

Any thoughts

RE: service packs

Go to Microsoft windows updates and download SP3, this should retrieve all

your missing updates.

Re: service packs

I'd start by creating a 'Slipstreamed' SP3 version of Windows XP. Use the

slipstreamed CD you created when it asks you to insert your CD for

installing the fax service.

I Use AutoStreamer, it easy to use and for the most part self explanatory.

In your case you only need to use the SP3 download file.

Some of the instructions at the web sites list below may reference SP2, just

substitute SP3 in that case.

Re: service packs

Is SP3 still installed or not?

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for

Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and

e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada.
