Desktop Icons Missing at Startup HOTFIX KB948277

It appears explorer.exe is not starting when some of our users logon. They

can get it to start by using task manager. I found a hotfix supplied by

Microsoft (list above), but although the install finishes, the KB log

indicates the following:

8.047: KB948277 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not

correct.

This started with just a few users, now its creeping through the network.

Its not a virus, and now other office (not on our network) are having the

same issue.

Any help is appreciated.

WinXP version(s) (e.g., WinXP SP1)?

How did you obtain the Hotfix?

Are all machines on the network fully patched?

How do you know it's not a virus or hijackware infestation (which could

easily spread over the network or via infected USB drives)?

To answer your questions:

I obtained the Hotfix from Microsoft for this exact issue (search the KB and

you will find the info).

All network machines fully patched.

Network secure - no virus nor hijack infestation.

What I am focusing on is the hotfix failing to install, once it is in I am

sure it will fix the issue as the write up fully explains our situation. We

are running XP Pro Sp2. I am contemplating installing SP3 and see what

happens.

Thanks for your interest.

The entry you posted from the KB948277.log is a generic entry found in

almost all KBxxxxxx.logs. Ex:

2.444: KB948881 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not

correct.

Suggest you either post the entire log or search for a more specific

error ... such as " Access Denied ".

Again, how have you determined this?
