laptop monitor does not display anything

I have a thinkpad t61p that I cracked the screen on, so i bought a cheap repacement off of ebay (stop s******ing). I swapped it out (I'm a computer engineer - I was comfortable doing this) and due to it being a cheap replacement (...I told you to stop s******ing) it wasn't a great fit. I guess due to the jiggling to get the blooming thing to fit, the ribbon connector on the back became detached and all i was getting on boot was a white screen. I connected the ribbon and now I get no display - I get a very VERY faint 'thinkpad' splashscreen on boot and a decernable change on the display but thats it. I connected the original cracked screen and got the same whereas before, the broken screen was still displaying on half the screen. I connected to a vga external monitor and the display was fine. Any ideas? Have I blown/shorted something else when the ribbon detached?

If you're referring to the ribbon connector which is sealed on the back near the top of the lcd (video connector) then I fear you may have damaged the ribbon cable or blown the backlight. Please check this website, I had a similar problem with one of my laptops while replacing a lcd display but under different circumstances, I dropped mine and cracked the display. Then after replacing the lcd I had the same symptoms as you but turned out to be broken backlight and damaged motherboard.

 

I still have that laptop, it's one of my very first failures, but you know what they say, you learn from your mistakes. :D

If you are getting a very faint image it is likely to be a backlight or inverter problem.

Hi, reading this, your original cracked screen now also doesn't light, so that suggests either the connections to the inverter or the inverter itself rather than the backlight tube. The inverter can sometimes be within the laptop case rather than the lid.

For help in finding the inverter and checking it out I found this site quite useful, and for other laptop problems as well.=
