Guest John Davis Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 installing hard drive in 2.5" USB case andf connecting to computer with XP for data salvage Hello: I'm trying to salvage my hard drive. Following is the advice I got from a user of this newsgroup: "To see if your hard disk is still useable, remove it from the laptop and install it in an external 2.5" USB case. You can now connect this case to any Windows XP PC to check your files. Later on you can use the same case plus a 2.5" hard disk as your backup device. You'll be surprised how little it costs and how effective it is." Do you know where to find instructions for installing the hard drive into the case? Do they come with the case? Is this a simple procedure? Also, how do I connect the case to the computer with XP? And, once this connection is made, what steps do I follow in order to salvage the data on the hard drive? Does XP have a built-in utility? Thank you, John

If you're not sure how to copy your data files from the USB disk to an internal disk, ask a friend. You want this to be a safe operation, with no accidents.

Are you suggesting that there is no utility for this kind of a procedure? (I would be connecting it to a desktop with XP operating system.) Are there are instructions for this procedure on the web?

The connector must be removed carefully. If not, you can bend or even break one of the IDE staking pins on the drive. The reverse is true when you attach the drive to the mini-IDE cable inside the USB enclosure. There are other ways to get your data preserved and protected. A small business PC shop can image the drive for you and provide your data on optical disk. Doing this operation isn't difficult, but once you have the enclosure up and going you still face the issue of data recovery. This may be a case of money is cheaper than time & effort. *Don't consider Best Buy (Geek Squad) or Circuit City ( ___Dog ) services - you'll get ripped off. Is this a simple procedure? The case that I have has two screws which hold the ends in place. Remove one end. You will need an adapter to connect the drive to the socket in the case. Sometimes the case comes with one. Remove the drive from the laptop following the instructions in the fine manual for the laptop. Plug the adapter onto the end of the drive which contains the cable sockets. Slip the drive into the case, and bolt the end back on. > > Also, how do I connect the case to the computer with XP? Just plug one end of the cable into an available USB port on the computer. The drive gets its power from the USB port. I use Windows Explorer to copy data from one drive to another. > > Thank you, > > John > > Jim

Get an enclosure for the type drive it is, and for the physical size it is. I got mine from Drive Solutions, but a search will find many sellers. slipping it in is easy. Then when you plug it in to USB it should show as an external drive and you can copy from or to it, format it etc as you desire. I use my old one for backing up files. It is a good idea (I think) to disable write caching on the drive so you can pretty much unplug it at will after a short time to write what you copy to it. This is done under My Computer >right click on drive while it is plugged in > properties > hardware > properties > policies. All this assumes the drive is in working order when you remove it from the computer initially. -- Gerald Ross Cochran, GA A day without radiation is a day without sunshine.

Does XP have a built-in utility? Get one of these and forget about enclosures, unless you really want the convenience of the enclosure. http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/pro_list/61 Costs about $25. Supports three sizes of IDE and SATA and you just plug it into a USB port. -- Jordon
