Wireless connection malfunction

Using: Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop running windows XP Professional, although the sticker on the back (certificate of Authenticity) says "Windows XP Home edition"

 

This is an old machine handed down to me.

 

When I got it,it was very slow so I managed to get some info off the net to speed things up, and was quite happy with the resultant improvement as far as speed was concerned. Unfortunately, somehow I have inadvertently upset my wireless connection and cannot re-connect.

I have a D-Link wireless cardbus adapter DWL-G650.

 

The wireless network icon at the bottom left of the screen says I am connected:-

 

Speed 54.0 mbps.

Signal strength : Excellent

Status: Connected.

 

Whereas in fact I am not.

In addition there are numerous errors in the "system" & "application" logs.

However if I connect via the Ethernet cable everything works fine.

 

Is there any possibility to restore the wireless capability? If so please keep in mind that the instructions will need to be in plain language and "step by step", in order for me to be able to follow.

 

The machine was running IE-6, so I tried to install IE-7, but it did not install, saying that the windows version was not genuine.

 

I do have the original discs, but have no idea how to re-install.

Hi, quite few things are worrying, first the conflict of operating system types, XP Professional is running but the sticker says Home Edition, that would be fine if the upgrade path was genuine, but the message that it is not a genuine copy when you tried to install IE-7 suggests that is not the case.

The disks you were given with it, what does it say on the label or labels?

If those disks will help you get the machine back to the original and legal operating system we can advise and help as needed, but if the system continues to show it is not genuine there could be problems. We would have to refuse further help for a start unless you sorted things out with Microsoft, that may mean buying the upgrade legally.

 

Sorry if that seems bad news, but Microsoft are very strict regarding their copyrights, we have to respect that.

I am assuming ( from plastic nev's post ) that your XP Pro is a legal copy ?

 

If you have an ethernet cable - can you try connecting direct to the router with this please.

Wirelessly

Start > Run > ..type in ......cmd.......ENTER

 

At the prompt type in .......ipconfig /all ............ENTER

You will get a list.

 

At the top left of screen is a small black box.

Right click on this > Edit > Select All

Right click on the black box again > Edit > Copy

 

You will probably need to Paste this into WordPad or Notepad.

Start > All Programs > Accessories.

Open Notepad from here.

Paste the list ( CTRL + V )

Click on File > SaveAs .....and save it to a memory stick.

 

Take the memory stick to the machine you are using now > open Notepad or Wordpad > Open the file > copy and paste the list here.

 

( Bit long-winded but there is no other way :) )

Hi Nev,

In view of what you have stated regarding copyright infringement etc., maybe I could try and restore the machine to its original state (if possible) to ascertain whether or not that was in fact legal to begin with and take it from there.

The discs that I have are:-

1. For reinstalling Dell Tools Software

2. For reinstalling Dell Inspiron System Software

3. For reinstalling Sonic RecordNow 6.5.3 Software

4. For reinstalling Cyberlink PowerDVD

If you could suggest a tutorial to assist me, I will know soon enough whether it is "genuine"or not, the moment I try and download MSE. This machine is very old and if it proves to be "pirated", it will not be feasible to buy a new operating system.

Is this machine a Dell Inspiron ?

 

If it isn't your Recovery Disks are not going to work anyway as they are tied to the original motherboard of the original machine

Hi, I see from your original post that it is indeed a Dell inspiron Which is also stated on the system reinstall disk, so it should be OK as they look to be the original disks issued with the machine, to be sure, there may be a copy of the validation or product key on the disk cover or paper protector, if the number corresponds with that on the Windows Home sticker then all should be fully legal again. If not on the cover, then once installed it should show on system information under "Validation" anyway.

As far as the other disks, you will need to also use the Dell tools disk I would think, but the Sonic, and also the Cyberlink are up to you, they are only players/recording burner.

 

Best of luck and hope all goes OK with the install, though I can't help with how it should go, or in what order to use the disks, as I don't know the Dell system, Ken may do.
