Well, then perhaps you'd like to tell us what the problem is that you

replacing explorer.exe would fix?

explorer.exe basically *is* Windows.

Open a CMD window and type this sfc /scannow Scans the integrity of all

protected system files and repairs the system files if needed.

I would guess as well. But, SP2 replaced explorer.exe with its version.

Its in the default windows folder. In the cases of pre-SP2 XP install, may

be twice replaced if SP2 is installed subsequently.

I'm so sorry that you haven't recovered from your accident, Chris.

Apparently the horror of going off a cliff has caused you to think you are

an MS-MVP when you aren't. Nor should anyone download files from a website

Do you really want to trust someone that was banned from posting

directly to Microsoft Usenet servers, someone that has posted links to

pornographic materials on HIS WEBSITE, who's website is in the MVP HOST

Block list, and who provides a tool for your use that will block access

to reputable anti-malware sites without telling you he's doing it?

And do you really want to trust someone that has had to change their

posting identity after being busted by MS as a fake MVP?

You have 2 options IMHO:

1. Format & reinstall Windows. (A Repair Install won't fix this!)

2. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis

log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2

(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in

conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on

its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any

hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and

independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

Without Explorer.exe you don't have windows, you only have a command

line interface, SO actually explorer.exe IS windows.

Re: explorer.exe

Reason I ask is, does it have the same horrible drawbacks in XP as it does

in Win9x? Or does XP keep the database current.

Of course, the likelihood that this is a case of a corrupt Explorer.exe is

next to nil, while the likelihood of infection is near 100%.

Re: explorer.exe

I believe it keeps it current, but I'm not sure exactly what you're getting

at. However, that said, SFC in XP is a bit more limited, at least in some

respects, in that it's pretty much all or nothing, and you can't get a

usable log that tells you exactly which files were updated (unlike in

Win98SE). (You can use Event Viewer - but, big deal).

Feedback from credible users suggests this site may not be what it claims to

be.

Re: explorer.exe

When I say "keep the database up to date" I mean that when files within the

testing domain are legitimately updated, the database is updated as well, in

some manner or another, so that SFC doesn't replace version 5.00.1200 of

some DLL with 5.00.1120, at least not without a seriously in-your-face,

Vista style, triple-layer "Are you SURE?!?!?!?!?" prompt involved.

I'm going to HAVE to shell out some simoleans for a good, up-to-date app to

track changes (for installations, uninstalls, testing stuff like the above.)

Got any suggestions? Can't seem to find my license for the RegSnap I thought

I bought back around the turn of the century. And it is *old*!
