Hi there.

This computer is beginning to hang for 1,2 or even 3 minutes at a time.

I had it from my son (it was then much faster than my old XP machine) when he was updating. I have removed Avast and private firewall in an attempt to speed it up but it hasn't worked.

I feel it's time for a good clear out. Wipe the drive and re-install everything.

Its currenty running under my son's name to whom all software was licenced but he emptied his files before passing it across - with the MS Vista CD.

Can I do this? Or do I have to obtain W7 or something. I do have XP professional here some where along with another CD of vista but as it lists computer make up at registration it appears I may have some difficulties.

cheers

Hi Jim

The Operating System is actually licensed to the machine and not an individual. If the copy of Vista that you have ( The disk ) is installed on the machine then there is no problem at all with you wiping the drive and re-installing.

If the copy of Vista (on the disk ) has not been installed on that machine but is installed on another machine then it would be illegal to have it on 2 systems.

The same applies for XP. If the installation is already on one machine you cannot put it on a second.

You do not need to get a copy of Win7.

We could have a go at cleaning the machine up and getting it running better - this would take a few posts to complete ( quite a few if you have malware on the disk ).

Let us know what you want to do :)

Ok I will check with my son tomorrow that this os is not used in any other machine. I feel sure this is so as he has gone apple mac because he is into graphics, that is it's his job.

Thanks for informing me that the disk goes with the machine and not the person. I appreciate that the machine can be cleaned up without a complete re-installation.

I feel that there should be no malware (famous last words I know) as we have only recently done this. But you need to be sure....

Ok I'll feed back tomorrow.

Meantime back at this ranch, we needn't wait for a reply to carry on checking - only if I definitely need a re-instal.

What would you like me to do with this machine first?

Hi Jim

I will be around for most of the day - so check back regularly :)

Let me know how much RAM you have on the Vista machine.

Start > right click Computer > Properties

Also - which Service Pack is installed?

This will be near the top.

Start > Computer > right click C:|

That's fine :)

lets just check to see if you have any bugs on the system.

Download MBAM from here:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_pro

Click on Products.

You want the free version.

Download > Install > Update and Run.

It will produce a log.

Copy and post this here please.
