Antivirus XP 2008

I REALLY hope someone can help me! I keep getting these error messages saying

my "Computer is infected. Get an antivirus or spyware remover to clean it".

And then I get redirected to a window advising me to purchase "Antivirus XP

2008". Has anyone else received these messages? Is this a genuine Microsoft

product? I have Nod32 Antivirus. And I had been using Spybot regularly which

was working really well but it has suddenly stopped working. Can anyone help

me to get rid of these messages?

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log

to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2

(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in

conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on

its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any

hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and

independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

have to start the scan all over again! I can't get the scan finished. HELP!!

Obviously I am very much a beginner when it comes to computer so I need all

Try it in Safe Mode, the Safe Mode that doesn't include networking. Hit

F8 continually right after the beep that comes from inside the computer

when you reboot and then choose the one at the top of the list that says

Safe Mode.

Do you really want to trust someone that was banned from posting

directly to Microsoft Usenet servers, someone that has posted links to

pornographic materials on HIS WEBSITE, who's website is in the MVP HOST

Block list, and who provides a tool for your use that will block access

to reputable anti-malware sites without telling you he's doing it?

And do you really want to trust someone that has had to change their

posting identity after being busted by MS as a fake MVP?

What are your thoughts on Spybot? Is it a waste of time?

Second that :-) Removed the rotten thing from next door neighbours PC

yesterday using their removal tool.

Also downloaded and installed Spybot for her :

It found the few files and folders that the removal tool could not remove.

Spybot S&D is okay but wouldn't solve your problem.

Try:

Kaspersky's AVPTool

http://downloads5.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/AVPTool/

There's no updating involved since the scanning engine is updated

several times a day and you simply download the updated scanner whenever

you want to do a scan.

Also:

Download and execute HiJack This! (HJT)

Please, do not post HJT logs to this newsgroup.

Fora where you can get expert advice for HiJack This! (HJT) logs.

NOTE: Registration is required in any of the below fora before posting

a HJT log and read the 'stickies' (instructions/guidelines) for

the respective HJT forum.

FYI:

How do you boot to Safe Mode?

By pressing/tabbing F8 (or F5 on some keyboards) during re-boot.

Alternatively:

click onto Start==>Run, type "msconfig" (without quotation marks), click

OK. Then click onto BOOT.INI tab and 'check' /SAFEBOOT then OK and click

Restart. To go back to Normal Mode, you must access the System

Configuration utility again and click the General tab then click/check the

radio button 'Normal Startup'- load all device drivers and services'.

Dear Mike...I read this post with interest, as this virus invaded my computer

last night. By this morning, the computer is virtually useless...it logs off

immediately following logon, even in safe mode. I am unable to start the

computer in safe mode or any other mode, for that matter. I have a couple of

removal programs copied to a CD, but am unable to run the CD on my computer

due to not being able to get into Windows. I've tried safe mode command

prompt and that won't load either. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Thanks in advance.

this...it has consumed two full evenings...LOL. Now my computer is clean

(and empty!). Thanks for replying, though! Another thought...I was looking

at pictures of a cemetary where my father is buried (morbid, I know...I'm

weird), and THAT'S when disaster struck in the form of this "cancer"...I

wonder how it got past my anti-virus and firewall programs??? Any thoughts?

Thanks again.

In the future:

1. Dont download a virus. Dont install a pluging that a webpage says is

required to view the page

2. Dont install a virus

3. It's all up to you

Re: Antivirus XP 2008

Plato...thanks for the advice. I never downloaded anything....virus,

plug-in....nothing. I was actually on Ancestry.com, searching the Social

Security Death Index and looking at pictures of cemetaries...when BAM....it

happened. My anti-virus software was UTD, my firewall was ON and I never

open e-mail from senders not known to me. Thanks for replying.
