Guest Henry Kolesnik Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 I just bought a 22" wide screen Acer LCD monitor because I wanted one when they dropped below $200.00. Acer recommends setting the video card for 1680 by 1050 which I did. My Samsung 19" LCD is set for 1280 by 1024. Maybe I'm not experienced enough but I really don't see where the 22" has any advantage except in displaying graphs from the Active Trader Pro by Fidelity and on Outlook Everything is smaller but spread out, so for Outlook Express I can see the entire contents of the folders, and read all the titles, date and size. On IE the print is much smaller even when I set it to largest. My nVidia PCI card has the option to rotate what's displayed but there's no swivel and addon cost about $100.00, too much for a retiree. I must be missing something, what is it? Thanks Hank

"Wide screen" is a joke unless you like to watch wide screen movies on your computer; otherwise, the benefit is to the manufacturers' profits. -- dadiOH ____________________________ dadiOH's dandies v3.06... ....a help file of info about MP3s, recording from LP/cassette and tips & tricks on this and that. You can set it lower at the video card settings, then on the monitor itself - use the buttons on the monitor - turn OFF the resolution notice that will appear at power-on. You might want to check the monitor manual for this, but it shouldn't be hard to find. I use the same setup on my desktop PC, a 19" and a 22". I generally use the wider screen for things like audio waveform images, and also to have multiple windows open at once and in the foreground. HTH -pk

I have Dual Acer 22" 1680x1050 LCD panels on this computer, I use the left side for email and other things, the right side for browsing, IM, and other things that I do at the same time. When it comes time to process invoices, I keep the accounting package on the left screen and the time/tracking package on the right screen so that I can validate between them. As for Small fonts - yes, that's a drawback to using hi-res settings, but with 22" screens, for me, the 1680x1050 is reasonable and easy to read. Change your screen to a multiple of 1680/1050 and it should be clear, off resolutions look like crap on LCD panels. So, a 1680x1050 is a 1.6:1 ratio, you want to use something with that ratio (1024x768 is a 1.3:1 ratio and would not look clear). -- Leythos - spam999free@rrohio.com (remove 999 to email me) Public Service Warning: Learn about PCButts before you trust: http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t513604-author-of-removeit.html http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=pcbutts1+thief

And you're missing the fact that it's 1680 wide, with is about 656 pixels of are you can put other things on the screen without covering them. Not everyone runs apps FULL SCREEN, so you could have your email client open and your Usenet client or web browser open at the SAME time and not have one blocked, or at least have both mostly fully visible. Many people that don't run apps full screen find they get a lot more work done by placing apps where they can see them both. -- - Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum. - Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist" spam999free@rrohio.com (remove 999 for proper email address)
Guest Henry Kolesnik Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 Re: 2 monitors, one 22" wide ? Hey guys, thanks for all the tips, at least now I know I wasn't doing something wrong. I like the monitor so I guess I'll have to find a good res compromise or live with it at 1680. It's a lot brighter than my Samsung SyncMaster 914V which may be 2 years old by now. Every year or so I buy the next bigger size when it goes below $200.00 I started with 13, then 15, then 17 now I have 19 and 22. In th epast I sold the smaller ones but I think I like having 2 monitors and may keep both. Mine is a Acer AL2216W and I wonder if anyone knows if Acer makes a "plugin" swivel stand for this one that doesn't take a lot of space or have to be clamped to the desk edge? Many places sell VEST mounts that you can put on a Wall or other. We use a lot of double screen setups for Medical facilities and mount them the the walls of cubicals, side by side, and the bracket costs about $35, but these are not user adjustable - they need an allen wrench (which we don't leave for the users). Open a google search and type in "VESA 75 swivel mount" without the quotes, you'll see all different types of mounts for LCD panels. I've used about 200 of the Vantage Point Wl01-B Lcd Mount With Tilt (Black) units at $35 each, but thise are just a wall mount, not a stand. This place (I have never used them and don't have any connection to them) has a buch of designs that can give you and idea: http://www.ergomart.com/lcd_monitor_stands/lcd_monitor_stand.htm -- - Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum. - Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist" spam999free@rrohio.com (remove 999 for proper email address)

Mine are never full screen. If one is "too covered" to click it active I just Alt Tab. I can see the usefulness of having more width available when multi-tasking. My only beef is because the way monitors are measured - diagonally - leads people to think that "upgrading" from, for example, a 17" 4:3 ratio monitor to a 22" 16:9 one is going to get them a nice big image. -- dadiOH ____________________________ dadiOH's dandies v3.06... ....a help file of info about MP3s, recording from LP/cassette and tips & tricks on this and that.
