Guest JH Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Hello, I am in the process of setting up a new Terminal Services server. Currently we use 2003 Server with TS installed on a backup server. I have the new server in and was wondering if it would be better to just install Windows 2008 and use the new Terminal services? Currently, 2003 TS has been working well but are limited to printing to a local usb printer. We have one user that was successful in printing to his USB 1022 HP printer. This printer is no longer manufactured so it seems I am running to a dead end on getting local printers to work. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Guest Jeff Pitsch Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Re: Advice Needed for new Terminal Services Server setup There are no real limitations to printing with Win2k3. I'm guessing you didn't have the driver installed on the server which would prevent printing from working correctly. Guest Allen Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Re: Advice Needed for new Terminal Services Server setup You should check to see if the HP 1022 printer is on the list of printers supported for RDP printer redirection. My gut tells me it's not. I've had no problems with recent non-multifunciton HP laserjet printers, so if this one remote worker is the only issue I would inform/persuade him/her to buy a new printer. As to running Server 2008, my primary concern would be whether or not all your apps will run on 2008. If your users are just running Office and browser based apps, you should not have any problems with Server 2008, but if you have some third party LOB apps, you may run into issues.

Guest JH Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Re: Advice Needed for new Terminal Services Server setup Actually, the 1022 is what is recommended for printing to a local printer while connected in TS. Thanks for the info on the application compatibility with 2008. I was thinking since it wasn't the 64bit version, that the applications would work. Maybe I'll stick with 2003 for now. Have either one of you guys used the dual NIC setup for publishing just the applications to the users rather than having them log in to the whole desktop? Guest JH Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Re: Advice Needed for new Terminal Services Server setup Yeah, I did have three different printers and a multitude of drivers when trying to print to a local printer via USb through TS. None of the worked until I purchased the 1022 which was what was recommended in other MSOFt groups. Thanks, but maybe I'll just stick with 2003 for now. Guest JH Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Re: Advice Needed for new Terminal Services Server setup Yes for the published apps. I haven't done this before and wondered if it was pretty reliable. Thanks "Jeff Pitsch" wrote: > Dual NIC setup? Guest Vera Noest [MVP] Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Re: Advice Needed for new Terminal Services Server setup As you can see in HP's documentation here: HP Printers Supported in Citrix MetaFrame Presentation and Terminal Server Environments http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp? objectID=c00213455 the HP LJ 1022 is supported under TS, as long as you use the HP Laserjet 6L PCLe driver which comes with the Windows OS. _________________________________________________________ Vera Noest MCSE, CCEA, Microsoft MVP - Terminal Server TS troubleshooting: http://ts.veranoest.net *----------- Please reply in newsgroup -------------* =?Utf-8?B?Skg=?= <JH@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote on 29 jul 2008: > Actually, the 1022 is what is recommended for printing to a > local printer while connected in TS. Guest Jeff Pitsch Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Re: Advice Needed for new Terminal Services Server setup I would avoid dual nic's. Windows doesn't dual home all that well. is there a particular reason you need dual homed nic's? Or are you implementing load balancing with the NIC's or something? Either corrupt or won't work under TS. One thing to consider is that none (and I do mean *NONE*) of your Server 2003 licenses are valid. You will need new server licenses, server CALs and TSCALs. This can run into a few bucks................. Sounds like you just need to resolve your printing problems within 2003.... -- Regards, Hank Arnold Microsoft MVP Windows Server - Directory Services
