Server Backup 2008

Hi Everybody,

I have a server running on Server2008. Unfortunately, I have experienced

problems that I suspect to be related to a Promise Supertrac 8350

controller.

Thus, I have made a backup of both partitions with WindowsServerBackup

(built-in) and tried to restore the backup on a single disk attached to

another controller.

The physical disk is smaller than the former array, but my partitions are

together smaller than the disk size of the new HD. Even though the restore

utility tells me that the target disk is too small for the partitions.

What can I do?

Thanks for your time

Ole

Hello Ole,

You have to use the same size of harddisk for restoring the operating system,

not smaller. Maybe you can use "Format and repartition disks" option on the

"Choose how to restore the backup" page.

Also have alook here:

Re: Server Backup 2008

Checking the option does not help...

So, Windows backup is practically useless...

Thanks for your help

I believe it's based on the target physical disk size being smaller despite

the partitions not totalling the original disk size. If this is the case, I

wouldn't blame the software.

Hello Ole,

From my point of view you can not blame the OS. Every system has limits and

requirements.

Re: Server Backup 2008

It's based on the target physical disk size being smaller despite

the partitions not totalling the _target_ disk size.

This is what I think is not smart. I can shrink my partitions on Server2008

to easily fit onto that other disk, but the OS does not restore because I do

not have enough (unpartitioned and unformatted) space.

That is what disappoints me. At first sight the Backup SW is great,

installing drivers first, using networ backups, great bare metal,

lightening-fast, and then such a restriction. I would not mind if there is

no resizing option, I can take care of that before, but this size

restriction limits the whole great program...

Thanks a lot for all your opinions and support.
