Software to view vista files using windows xp

Is there a download available for Windows XP that will allow me to see files

that were created using Vista? I have some people using XP and others using

Vista and when a file from Vista is sent to the person using XP, rthey are

unable to open it. I know that you can save the vista file in compatibility

mode, but I was trying to eliminate that step. Any help would be great!

It might help if you stated what these files were or what software was used

to create them

Its nothing to do with Vista or XP but what specific software was used to

create them.

eg Office 2007 files, saved in office2007 format, require a 'viewer' to be

installed on Office 2003 in order for the Office 2003 user to be able to

view them.

They are basic office files such as word documents and such. So you are

saying that a document created in word using vista, would require me to

download a viewer for word compatable with xp?

I see what you are saying, however the operating system uses different

formats for word, ppt, etc. A word document was created using Vista word.

That doc was sent to a user currently operating on xp. When he tried to open

the file, it was scrambled and could not be read.

WTF are you talking about? WHAT programs are they using in Vista?

Perhaps you could ask in a group that has something to do with the

programs they are using.

It is has nothing to do with the operating system...

it's simply a matter of the applications you are using

First let's get you on the right track. Vista is an Operating System it does

not create Office files. Microsoft Office is a suite of programs that run

under Vista , it is this set of programs that are creating the files.

From what I believe you you are saying is that Office 2007 is producing

files in a format that Office 2003 can not read.

There are three ways to tackle this problem one is to get the users of

Office 2003 to upgrade to Office 2007 (this of course costs money), the

second way is to get the Office 2003 users to install the 2007 compatibility

pack (see the link below), thirdly is to get the 2007 users to save their

documents in the old format, this can be done by useing the "Save as"

function.

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007

Re: Software to view vista files using windows xp

Take Windows Vista and Windows XP out of the picture because they have

nothing to do with your problem.

My guess is one of you is using OFFICE 2007 and the other is using OFFICE

2003 or older (2002, 2000 etc). The document you're having problem opening

could be in Office 2007 Open XML format. What you need is Microsoft Office

2007 compatibility pack.

Get it from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en

Install the compatibility pack on your PC that has problem opening the

document.

No, this has nothing to do with compatibility mode or anything else

like that. There is *nothing* that stops a file created in Vista from

being opened in XP. There are only applications issues, not operating

system ones. The only issue is what application created the file and

having the same (or compatible) application available.

It's just a guess, but are you trying to open files that were created

in Word 2007, or other Office 2007 applications? If so, the problem is

that Office 2007 by default uses a whole different file format

than earlier versions of Office did. Word's new file format is called

..docx, instead of the older .doc format.

So the problem is that if you create a .docx file in Word 2007

(regardless of whether you are running Word 2007 under Windows Vista

or XP), another computer running an older version of Word (again,

whether it's running Word under Vista or XP) can not read it.

There are two possible solutions:

1. When you create the file in Word 2007, instead of doing a "Save,"

do a "Save as," and choose "Word 97-2003 document." That will save it

in the old .doc format instead of the new .docx one, and allow it to

be read by any version of Word.

2. Have the other computer, the one running the older version of Word,

go to

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en

or http://tinyurl.com/y5a879

and install the "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel,

and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats"

The second solution is the better one.

Its nothing to do with the operating system

Its all to do with the different versions of Office

Everyone else who answered the point understood more or less perfectly.

That you failed to comprehend is a statement of the poor educational

standards at your school. As the OP believes that his problem is to do with

incompatibility between XP and Vista, this is as good a place to ask as any.

As Vista is involved, the assumption, however incorrect, is entirely

resonable.
