WindowsXP Pro SP2/ Office 2003

I have just had my computer reformatted, (Mother board problem)

Now whenever I click on the install updates icon in the systray , these two

updates won't install, (KB951978) & KB950759), instead I get this message in

the Automatic Updates box;

Some updates cannot be installed ie:(KB951978) & (KB950759)

What should I do?

Re: Can't install 2 updates

I went to this page:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 , as you

suggested, but I couldn't follow it. Maybe it's because I'm 80 or just

stupid.

eg: Would I have to got to the MS update site, find these files & install

them?

Would it be because I haven't go SP 3 installed?

All I want to know in laymen's term, is how I can resolve my issue.

Although I searched for an answer for my problem and looked at; How to ask a

question: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375, I could find no solution

Another issue,

When I received the notification email re "Can't install 2 updates" , I

clicked on Read and rate the response and was taken to this page:

Although 'Done' appeared in the lower taskbar the page was blank

Is there something wrong witht the link?

I went to the General discussion siteand logged in to find the reply

Did you have to post the same quesion in AumHa Forums, chequer (and not

bother to reply to your thread)?

http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=35092

If you can't figure out how to do Methods 1 and/or 2 in KB943144, see

http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=33560

Or open a free support incident with MS PSS.

Re: Can't install 2 updates

Robert,

Sorry for not replying to the thread

Unfortunately I have recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer and the

medication to control, is knocking me about a bit.

Fortunately with medication I am likely to die with it and not of it.

As to posting on the AumHa Forums I thought I might get a more simplified

reply on how to resolve my problem. I could get anywhere with the info you

sent

I eventually found a fix for KB951978 at the MS site and finally got this

update installed but now I get this:

Some updates could not be installed

The following updates were not installed:

Security Update for Windows XP with Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5 and 11

(KB941569)

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB950759)

Re: Can't install 2 updates

If you don't have the skills to try the fixes in

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144, you won't have the skills to do the

alternate fix I have in mind.

I'd recommend that you either take the machine back to the shop* or open one

or more free support incidents about KB941569 and KB950759. And I'd

recommend that you do so soon as I believe KB950759 will be superseded by a

new cumulative IE update very soon.

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:

https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:

http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in

the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft

subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with

security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related

to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB941569).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary

for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web

site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

*Tell the shop that the machine was fully patched when you took it in and

you expected it to be fully patched when you picked it up. If they give you

a hard time and you paid with a credit card, contest the charge with your

bank.

Re: Can't install 2 updates

PA Bear,

I have fixed my problem.

Method:

I downloaded IE 7 and saved it.

Using Add/Remove I uninstalled IE 7 that was on my PC, restarted my computer

then installed the saved IE 7.

I don’t know how the chap that reformatted my computer installed IE 7 but

apparently he couldn’t have done it properly.

Up to now I have no more trouble with the MS updates.

Thanks for your help

PA Bear,
