Installing applications and patches via Remote Desktop for Admin

Hi,

Is it perfectly safe to install Windows patches via Remote Desktop for

Administration in Windows 2003? What about regular applications? Should one

always use the console switch?

Thanks,

Jamie

Jamie,

Install mode is to do with per-user ini files in Terminal Server, described

here for example: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/186504

Terminal Server 2003 automates this and assumes Install mode. You get an

extra dialogue to press "Finish" when you have done installing, which puts

it back into Execute mode.

You don't need to use it unless you have Terminal Server installed (not

remote administration) and pre-2003. If you enter << change user /query >>

on W2K3 without Terminal Server you will get: "Install mode does not apply

to a Terminal Server configured for remote administration",

OK; thanks. But as far as just using regular Remote Desktop (on a server

without TS) to install apps and patches, that should be ok?

Yes, that's what the'change user /query' response means.

Hope that helps,

I do it all the time. I have about 12-14 servers (including test servers).

On servers that are running Terminal Services (Application Mode for

W2K), I usually will do it when no one is on the server. Since the only

ones I have are my Citrix servers, it's not hard. I do it off shift,

knock anyone off and turn off their ability to log on.

Or use Add/Remove Programs to install. I prefer telling folks to use

that since the /install & /execute are taken care of for them...
