I have noticed in add/remove programmes i have windows xp service pack 3. I

thought it was not available until later as an update. in my update history,

this servce pack was installed as an update on 7th may, 2008. also in

add/remove list there is no mention of service pack 2. could someone clarify

what service pack i do have and should I do anything to alter this

situation. my machine is running fine but lately has shut down without

warning . after this shutdown, it does not reboot but i can boot up as

normal. i have checked for malware and done a full virus scan. all come up

clean.any advice would be appreciated

Re: windows xp service pack 3

Start | Run | (type) winver | OK | If you see "Service Pack 3" in the

results, SP3 had been installed,

WinXP SP3 was released to Windows Update c. 07 May-08. For only a very

brief period thereafter, some users were offered SP3 by Automatic Updates.

WinXP SP3 was officially released to Automatic Updates on 10 Jul-08.

If WinXP SP3 is listed in Add/Remove Programs and WinXP SP2 isn't, you're

running WinXP SP3.

Re: windows xp service pack 3

Click start---right click my computer---properties. SP will be listed

there. Service Pack III supersedes SPII so no need to be listed in

add/remove. What happens when shutdown occurs?

Re: windows xp service pack 3

shutdown happens while i am doing different things. playing card

games, during anti-spyware scan and there is no warning. machine goes dead

suddenly. no windows closing down, no error warning, nothing. i can only

think its the power supply getting ready to pack in because the machine case

has started to get hot above where the power pack is. i can boot immediately

without a problem

All indications indicate power supply.
