printing problems server 2003, standard

Hello,

I have a win 2003 standard edition server that is accessed via Remote

Desktop by several users running XP on their individual workstations.

One of the work stations has an HP USB printer attached, and shared to all

other users. The printer works perfectly when used from the work stations.

The server has the driver installed for this printer as well (win 2003

version from the HP website.) All users have remote desktop configured to

forward the printer.

when a user prints from an application on the server, the first print works

properly, and then a print job labeled "Remote Desktop Redirected Printer

Doc" is sent repeatedly and soon there are thousands clogging the print

queue and the printer stops working until the queue is cleared.

other information: the repeated jobs show up on the queue manager on the xp

machine connected to the printer, and they show n/a under pages and file size

shows blank.

The printer on the server shows a port name of TS followed by a three digit

number.

Anybody Have any good ideas?

You may get more (better?) help if you post (crosspost) your question in the

microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax or microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan newsgroup.

Also, printer drivers are often very idiosyncratic, so it is vital to state what make and model of

printer is given the problem.

It's perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.

RE: printing problems server 2003, standard

Hello All,

Due to suggestions on

microsoft.public.windows.server.general

I'm cross posting here.

It was also suggested that I provide the printer make and model.

It is an HP LaserJet 1505

First and foremost, are you on SP2 or SP1? I read your follow-up and

saw that it's an HP printer. Here's a couple quick and easy things to

try out.

1) Right-click the printer and choose Properties.

2) On the Advanced tab, click the print processor button.

3) If it says anything other than Winprint, change it to Winprint.

Make sure default data type is RAW.

4) If you can, make sure it's also Winprint on the client side as

well.

Try this first. For good measure, restart the print spooler service in

case it doesn't accept the Winprint setting. If that doesn't help, I

have many more things you can try.

You do know XP has a connection limitation? A mere 5 for XP Home and just 10

for XP Pro. If all the network is trying to print to the HP printer on the

XP PC, you're probably way over the limitation.

SMB connection limitations have nothing to do with the RPC/RDP based

connectivity methods used for Terminal Services redirected printing.
