Guest ChrisS Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 Windows XP, SP2 I am experiencing difficulty with Internet access which has got very slow over the last few days. Windows security alert reports Firewall is off; Windows Firewall in Control panel says 'Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not runing'; so Windows will not allow me to enable Windows Firewall even through Control Panel. I also can't access Internet Options at all through Control panel; it was saying 'system administrator has denied access'; I am the system administrator presumably. Internet Options icon has now disappeared altogether from Control panel. Network Connections folder in Control panel is also empty. All was normal up to four days ago. I have AVG antivirus. Anyone got any suggestions how I can regain control?

HijackThis will NOT fix anything on its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22, http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, or other appropriate forums for review by an expert in such matters, not here.** If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ ChrisS wrote: > Windows XP, SP2 > I am experiencing difficulty with Internet access which has got very slow > over the last few days. > Windows security alert reports Firewall is off; Windows Firewall in > Control > panel says 'Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the > associated service is not runing'; so Windows will not allow me to enable > Windows Firewall even through Control Panel. > I also can't access Internet Options at all through Control panel; it was > saying 'system administrator has denied access'; I am the system > administrator presumably.
