Guest ThomasAJ Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I am a newbie with the MS backup utility provided with W2003 and yes I will get a better backup product but I need to backup the system now. OK so I did 2 full system backups yesterday to an external USB HD (26GB data on the server) but my floppy was not working so nothing was written to diskette. I installed a new floppy today, started backup, and backup now thinks it needs to back up 78GB. I think the problem is that the USB Ext HD is seen as a 'Local Disk (G:)' and so Backup is trying to backup C+G to G. When I connected the Ext HD today Disk Management knew nothing about the 52GB already on the Ext HD. I read in a W2003 book that a Media Pool has to be created or added to or something for backups but I can't figure out how. Yesteday thru Disk Management I gave the Ext HD the letter E and today G as I had problems copying data to my flash drive which automatically is given E and F. OK so I'm grossly confused about drive letters and disk management. -- Regards Tom
Guest ThomasAJ Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 RE: BACKUP seems to be backing up 3 times the data. I guess the Ext USB HD has to be part of 'Removable Storage'. I created a new media pool (right click medial pool/create media pool) but I cannot see where the Ext USB HDD is associated with the new media pool. The 'Media Information/Contains media of type' drop-down box is the only place I see any reference to media but I cannot see the Ext HDD. -- Regards Tom "ThomasAJ" wrote: > I am a newbie with the MS backup utility provided with W2003 and yes I will > get a better backup product but I need to backup the system now. > > OK so I did 2 full system backups yesterday to an external USB HD (26GB data > on the server) but my floppy was not working so nothing was written to > diskette. > > I installed a new floppy today, started backup, and backup now thinks it > needs to back up 78GB. > > I think the problem is that the USB Ext HD is seen as a 'Local Disk (G:)' > and so Backup is trying to backup C+G to G. > > When I connected the Ext HD today Disk Management knew nothing about the > 52GB already on the Ext HD. Guest Anthony [MVP] Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Re: BACKUP seems to be backing up 3 times the data. Tom, You should be able to change the backup job to select what drives you want to back up. Or else just create a new job. Delete the data on the USB drive and start again from there. NTBackup can do most things, but if you find the interface unhelpful you can take a look at http://www.backupassist.com. Guest ThomasAJ Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Re: BACKUP seems to be backing up 3 times the data. BackupAssist looks for the future. But can someone please help me with the Media Pool questions. -- Regards Tom "Anthony [MVP]" wrote: > Tom, > You should be able to change the backup job to select what drives you want > to back up. Guest Anthony [MVP] Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Re: BACKUP seems to be backing up 3 times the data. Hi Tom, Sorry, I didn't answer that part because you said you already had a successful backup. You don't need to do anything in Removable Storage. You are backing up to file and the drive is just another drive to the OS. Removable Storage is a sub-system for identifying things like tapes, where the device remains the same but the media in the device changes.
