New msconfig didnt installed

I downloaded the upgraded version of msconfig from Microsoft's site, hoping

to use the added Tools tab, which was not in the old version. However, the

Tools tab did not show up. I still have the old version of msconfig.

I am using Windows XP ver 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 2, with 2g RAM

I have Service Pack 2 which is what Microsoft said was required. Any advice?

Why don't you install SP3 since it includes that MSCONFIG update anyway.

I was told SP3 slows down the system especially during bootup. Anyone

has good experience with SP3.

Sure. SP3 is installed on all of my WinXP machines and it doesn't slow

down these systems at all. You may want to defrag your system right after

the successful installation.

You were told wrong. I have SP3 installed on both of my XP machines

here, and have experienced *no* slowdowns or any other problems with

it.

Whenever a new version of *anything* comes out, you always read about

all sorts of problems with it. But realize two things:

1. If you're reading about problems *here*, this where people come

with their problems, not with their successes. You get a very

distorted view of what's going on in the real world here; as someone

once said, "hang around a transmission shop and you will think that

all cars have transmission problems."

2. Most problems, by far, that people report here--whether or not they

are SP3-related--have nothing to do with defects in the software. They

result from people's ignorance, from bad or inadequate hardware, from

old drivers, from viruses, from spyware, and so on. And except for

very rare situations, they always get a fix for their problems, and in

most cases, that fix is a very simple one to implement.

Not likely, being as you have to jump through the WGA hoop to get it.

From the web site: "This download is available to customers running

genuine Microsoft Windows. Please click the Continue button to begin

Windows validation. As described in our privacy statement, Microsoft

will not use the information collected during validation to identify or

I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that you use Auto Update to get your

My way of dealing with updates.

Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates uncheck Automatic and check

"Notify me but don't automatically download or install". When notified

commence the process by selecting Start, Help and Support, Keep your

computer up-to-date with Windows Update and opt for a Custom install.
