Hibernation/Turn off hard drives Options?

I have a user with a desktop that runs super warm. He doesn't like to close

everything and shut down his computer so he's entering it into hibernation.

The problem is that it takes several attempts to wake it up out of

hibernation; it will come out eventually but only after several attempts.

After doing some research, I found it could be related to graphics drivers

which I am in the process of troubleshooting. In the meantime, can someone

tell me what the option for "turning off hard drives" would do? Has anyone

had problems with this?

Also, if applicable: this is a remote user that VPNs in to the network. I

suspect he probably just puts it in hibernation without disconnecting to VPN.

Would shared network drives cause the issue with waking it out of hibernation?

Is this user on SP2 or SP3? Is this a multiprocessor computer? It's

possible you can try and get the fix from the KB article and see if it

helps the situation: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951126

At the top of the page you'll see "View and request hotfix downloads",

click the link, accept the agreement, and fill in the form. Microsoft

will e-mail you a link to the patch and a password to extract it from

the archive.

What kind of attempts? Confusing standby with hibernation?

Thank you for your reply. This user I believe is still SP2 and is a single

processor computer. I just got back from looking at the desktop. He had an

unrecognized USB device which ended up being a scanner he doesn't use. I

unplugged that and hope that takes care of the problem.

Thank you for replying. Definitely hibernation. What happens is he

successfully puts it into hibernation with no problems. When he wants to

bring it out, it hangs with a status bar at about a third of the way complete

and just quits. He has to try it about 6 times before it will come out of

hibernation. Pls see my comment above re: USB device.
