Terminal Services to run apps

Here's what we have: 5user SBS2003 domain running sqlsvr with 5 attached PCs

We would like to add 5 external users via TS. We have licenses for the

additional 3rd party software that we want to run. Here are the questions:

Can I have 5 internal users and 5 external (TS) users simultaneously

connected to the domain server; internals running software on their machines

and the externals running in individual instances on the server?

I ask because it appears (casually among TS resources ) that I may require

an additional machine or ‘TS server’ just for the TS/App server.

I know I can connect via TS to the domain server and run a second instance

of my software on it, but I read there is a limit?

Thanks for help!

Re: Terminal Services to run apps

SBS2003 does NOT support terminal services on itself. You would need a 2nd

machine to run Terminal Services. The applications you want users to run

would have to be installed on the terminal server as well as any

dependencies. In other words, when installing software, treat it as a

workstation. Now saying that, make sure you get some training on TS because

installing applications is not done normally.

you will need TS CAL's which are either per user or per device.

The limit your reading about is the RDP your using is for admins only and

you get 2 + 1 remote connections. 2 standard RDP connection + 1 remote

console session. This type of remote admin is NOT terminal services in the

sense of sharing applications.

I would recommend the FREE book by Brian Madden on Windows 2003 Terminal

Services downloadable from his website at http://www.brianmadden.com
