TS 2008 How to re-assign user license?

Recommended Posts

I had a user that was connecting to TS 2008 using user mode licensing and now

that user is no longer with the company. How do I free up his license for

use by a new user?

Also, how can I tell what users are taking licenses? The only report I can

find shows how many licenses are in use and not who is using them.

Thanks in advance,

To revoke the Per-User CAL, you can delete the user's object in AD.

What if I still want the user to have access to AD through their local

workstation or OWA but not TS is there a way to do this and free up the

license for another user?

Sometimes I have users that were in the Field move into the office that no

longer require TS.

Are you saying that I need to remove the user in AD and create a new user to

free the license? This would be very cumbersome as we are using roaming

profiles.

Instead of deleting the User object, you could just delete the attribute

holding the user's license.

Rob, do you mean that one has to use ADSIedit or WMI and scripting

to remove the Terminal Services attribut in AD, just to keep the

Licensing Report up-to-date?

Do you really want the average TS manager to do that? And are you

sure that the average TS manager has enough rights to do that?

Have you considered to provide us with a little tool to do this?

If not, the Per User licensing report is bound to become totally

useless after a couple of months.

Re: TS 2008 How to re-assign user license?

I can't find attributes for terminal server license in the AD users and

computers -user properties. Does the check box for deny this user terminal

server access remove the license perhaps?

The Per-User CAL will get reclaimed after ~90 days without doing anything,

so the report will be fine in the long run.

If:

1) Users are no longer using TS.

2) But still need an account.

3) But you can't wait until the CAL is reclaimed

Then:

You can hand-edit the User object in AD.

The attributes involved are either terminalServer (on Win2003 schemas) or

msTSManagingLS, msTSLicenseVersion, msTSExpireDate (on Win2008 schemas).

How do you manually edit a User objet in AD?, Also this does not seem right

that I can't use the license manager to manage licenses?

I am using SBS2003 as the AD server and Server 2008 STD as the teminal and

the terminal is the license server.
