Automatic Update of What?

I received a messagebox with the title "Question".

Below it is a large graphic question mark. ie. "?"

The test says:

"There are new software updates available. Would you like to go to the

download location?"

[Yes] [No]

Is this legitimate? Should I have to guess?

Not knowing what software you have on your system it's difficult if not

impossible to tell you what this refers to. Personally I'd click the red

cross top right of the dialog box (if there is one) if not you may have to

click "no". Then do a full spyware check.

I can't imagine it is legitimate, although it might be. You never know. You

might have installed some shareware that isn't very well written. Since we

don't know anything about your machine, there's no way of knowing.

I certainly wouldn't click on it! Looking at what is running via Task

Manager would be wise, as would doing normal scanning for malware.

Should you have to guess? I can't answer that. If this is coming from

malware, I'm sure the malware author is hoping you will guess and guess

wrong. ;-)

MS does NOT send out messages such as that.

Though I can't comment on the authenticity of the bow you are looking at,

you should be aware that malware boxes of the type you describe will perform

their dastardly deeds whether you click 'yes' or 'no'. If you don't know

what it is (and it is a badly designed dialog box indeed that provides no

clue) the best action is to click the 'X' in the top right corner.
