Remote Desktop, SP3 oddities

Recommended Posts

I am having an issue where as it sits the machines on the network are running

xp pro with SP2. We use the GPO setting "Windows Settings/Security

settings/system services.Windows firewall/ICS start up mode: disabled" to

turn off Windows firewall when someone logs in. The problem is that when I

install SP3, the machine that now has SP3 installed can no longer be accessed

using remote desktop. Along with that, an error is recieved if I try to

manually turn on the firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS) service. The

error is a s follows:

Could not start the Windows Firwall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)

service on Local Computer. Error 0x80004015: The class configured to run as a

security id is different from the caller.

I can still connect to the other boxes still running SP2 from the one I

updated to SP3 but if they try to connect to it they get the standard time

out "Remote connections might not be enabled or computer might be too

busy..." message.

Finally the strange thing is that if you remove the machine that now has SP3

from the network or stop the "Turn off firewall" script in group policy the

remote desktop will work. Hopefully that is enough for someone to go on. I

would really like to get this straightened out and any help is appreciated.

You cannot connect to a remote computer or start a remote application when

you use Terminal Services Web Access or Remote Web Workspace on a Windows XP

SP3-based computer:
