dugit Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I have Medion p4101D desk top pc with windows 7 .My PC started going slow occasionally some time ago, what would happen when I clicked the mouse for something to happen the screen would freeze and I would usually have to exit the screen by logging off. This sort of problem then started to happen more frequently until now the PC is unuseable. I cannot get F11 to take PC back to factory condition . I've started in F8 safe mode but this will not work.. Have used start up and repair: result failed error code=0 X 490. Left my PC on then went back later and it had on screen: American Megatrends then a few lines and at end it said : Port0 Device error F1 to resume Any comments would be appreciated. Quote
KenB Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Hi and welcome to ExTS Thank you for the link to the other forum where you have been receiving help. This saves going over old ground. I would be inclined to take the hard drive out and connect it to another system. This will allow us to run some diagnostics on the drive and make sure that it is OK. You may also be able to get some of your data off it. You can do this with a hard drive to usb adapter similar to this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/SATA-Transfer-Adapter-Power-Drives/dp/B004ND4632/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1320140466&sr=8-2 You should then be able to access the drive as you would a memory stick. The drive will be 3.5 inch SATA ( smaller in laptops ) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! KenB Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 I want to be sure that the HD is definitely faulty If you connect it to another system as described, we can run Checkdisk on it. CheckDisk can often fix problems with the drive as well. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! dugit Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 So if I get the usb adapter as you suggest I would either using CHKDSK resolve my PC unuseable problem or it would directly identify that the Hard disc is faulty and needs replacing ? Quote
KenB Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Yes - that's about it. There may also be some diagnostics available on the hard-drive manufacturers site.
