Stuck in XP re-installation routine

The problem started when XP cannot sense the new SATA DVD drive I installed.

I wanted to check thru Device Manger, but the 'System' does not load and

there is an error msg.

Thus I tried to re-install my XP OS using the CD. However at the beginning

of the installation, this error msg appeared, "An exception occured while

trying to run "C:\WINDOWS\system32\sti_ci.dll, InstallWiaService"" There is a

'OK to terminate program' and 'cancel to debug' option, but no matter which

one I click, the installation continues.

This error msg appears another time, and another error msg appears," The

instruction at '0x77e37eff' reframed memory at '0x77e37eff'. The memory could

not be 'written'". Similar I was the same choices as the 1st msg. This hangs

the installation. Even my cursor can't move.

I restart my comp, and after the Windows logo appears, it jumps to this

installation process again and gets stuck in the same step. Booting the comp

using the CD doesn't help either, as it will still divert to the

installation.

Safe Mode doesn't help, as it will tell me it can't start in Safe Mode.

I have run diagnostic tests using DELL tests before windows load and there

is no problem. I'm using DELL Dimension, and had Trojan horse virus infected

before this installation problem.

Please advise.

Do you still have the new drive connected? If so, disconnect it and see if

that helps.

yes, I've disconnected the drive. I read somewhere on other forums which is

to disable the on board LAN connector in BIOS in such a situation. I've no

clue what that means.

If you boot with the cd and it jumps to the installation in pprogress

then it means that you aren't booting off the cd. Go in the BIOS and

make sure that the cd drive is before the hard disk in the startup boot

order.

Re: Stuck in XP re-installation routine

That .dll file mentioned in the error message is not an XP file--it is

either a W98 or WinME file. This reinforces John's comment that you may not

be booting from the CD. In the BIOS (watch the boot screen for the key to

press to enter setup--probably F2), there is a setting for Boot Sequence and

the CDRom drive needs to be set as the first boot device.
