Have heard mention of reinstalling display drivers inreference to missing

hibernate function.

This may sound like a silly question,

but...

What is a display driver,

Where are they located,

and how can they be identified in..

Winxp Pro.

Dell Insp. 9300

I have reinstall disks.

Thanks .

You'll also see it referred to as a video adapter. Look through the CDs that

came with your Dell and see if one of them is labeled Resources. You should find

the drivers for your display/video adapter there.

If you don't have that CD, go to this web site and enter the information from

the Service Tag on the bottom of your laptop. You should find the latest drivers

for your system there.

Full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3)? Why do you ask?

RE: Display drivers question

Thanks for both responses

Pa, response,

I fully installed SP3, but my missing hibernate feature never appeared,

(only three buttons in "turn off computer" mode. (standby, turnoff and

restart).

Originally had four buttons, (hibernate, standby, turnoff and restart).

I have installed/uninstalled SP3, three times but still no change. Have

since reinstated SP2.

Nep. response,

Yes I do have the original cd's.

I just needed to know, where to look and what to look for.

It's really not a problem. I just like to find out if it is solveable.

Thanks again.

Re: Display drivers question

If you want to see the Hibernate button, hold down the Shift key. If you want

the computer to hibernation immediately, simply hit the H key while the Turn Off

Computer box is displayed.

Here's an article from Microsoft with more info on this issue.

When you click “Turn Off Computer” on the Start menu, the Hibernate button does

not appear in Windows XP Service Pack 2 or in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893056

Note: I can't vouch for the procedure outlined in this article. I've never had

the need for this hotfix since I put a shortcut in the Quick Launch toolbar that

will initiate hibernation.

Good luck

Re: Display drivers question

Why did you start a new thread?

I didn't have the 4th button in WinXP SP2 and I still don't have it in WinXP

SP3.

Use the Shift key method, franktee.

Otherwise...

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for

Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and

e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada.

Re: Display drivers question

FWIW, I just installed the hotfix available in the article I posted earlier on a

computer running Windows XP SP2. Once I edited the registry as advised at the

bottom of the article, the Hibernate button appeared in the Turn Off Computer

box.

To obtain the hotfix, click on 'View and request hotfix downloads' at the top of

the article. Or, click on this link.

http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=893056&kbln=en-us

Follow the instructions to obtain the hotfix. Unzip the files and run this file.

WindowsXP-KB893056-x86-ENU.exe

Once you've installed the hotfix, follow the instruction to add the

ShowHibernateButton value to this registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System

Modify the ShowHibernateButton to have a value data of 1.

Good luck

Re: Display drivers question

Following up on my earlier response you should be able to reinstall SP3 and not

lose the Hibernate button.

FWIW, I found that the hotfix and registry modifications described in that

article will work in XP Pro SP2 as well as XP Home Edition SP2. If SP3 has been

installed on either platform, you can skip the hotfix. Just making the changes

to the registry will result in the Hibernate button appearing in the Turn Off

Computer box.
