Lost Part of Control Panel - Pls Help

Recommended Posts

First I noticed that the single click on the mouse was no longer an

option, maybe 3 days ago. When I went to the control panel, the mouse

Icon was gone, actually the entire part of the interface that let me

get to the windows display, to set the wallpaper and change the pixels

on the monitor was gone as well. I've taken the registry back two

days but would like to know if this is a probable solution before

taking the registry back further. I've just lost beaucoup time

because of another problem.

Thank-you,

Molly

What other problem, malware?

- Have you tried a different mouse? It's possible the left-click switch

is bad.

- Click Start, Run, type:

SFC /SCANNOW

Click OK. (Please notice the space before the slash.) If any files are

damaged or missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot

afterwards so damaged files will be replaced.

You could try TweakUi. Download TweakUI, one of the MS powertoys, from

here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

In TweakUi select My Computer, Control Panel. You can see a complete

list of Control Panel extensions. The one for mouse, keyboard etc is

main.cpl. Check the box before to display or uncheck to hide and click

on Aplpy and OK.

You do not say what your other problem is. It quite common for malware

to attack the means of restoring the computer and if main.cpl is missing

from the list in TweakUi it would not be a surprise. The main copy of

main.cpl is to be found in c:\windows\system32 and there is a backup

copy in c:\windows\system32\dllcache. Using Windows Explorer check to

see if one or both are present. You most likely need to enable Show

hidden files.

Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and

verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked

and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You may need

to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that

the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.

Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is selected and then

select View, Choose Details and check before Name, Type, Total Size, and

Free Space.

The normal way to restore missing or damaged files in the system32

folder is to use the System File Checker tool. Try Start, Run, type "sfc

/scannow" without quotes and hit Enter.

Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System

File Checker (Sfc.exe)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310747

You will need your Windows XP CD. You may encounter problems if your CD

does not include SP3 as seems likely.

Read this link as it contains a way forward if you have no CD

http://ask-leo.com/i_dont_have_an_installation_cd_for_windows_xp_what_if_i_need_one.html

If you need to point to a folder, instead of I386 I would try dllcache.

Re: Lost Part of Control Panel - Pls Help

Right on about TweakUI and the mouse. I had used it a couple of days

ago and must have unchecked the mouse. I uninstalled it because I had

changed some settings for window focus that were making me 'nuts' and

could there did not seem to be any way to undo the damage. Then I had

to rollback the registry three days and the issue was finally

resolved. No wonder they call them power toys. Anyhow, I

reinstalled tweakui and the main.cpl box was unchecked. Problem

resolved. I also checked everything in the control panel area to see

if I could resolve the issue described below. Nada.

The second problem, which I was not clear enough about. All of my

display setting ability is gone. I cannot change from 16 to 32 to 64

bit. No way to set wallpaper, pixels, color, etc. Do you have any

ideas? I am suspicious of tweakui due to the fact it did so in other

areas.

And you are right, I'm running without a disc. I need to copy one

then, I guess, change the serial number so I can use it. I'm hampered

by the fact a computer tech installed his copy of XP a few years back.

He said it was legal for him to do so. The problem is he's no longer

available and I've no disc.

I will run a couple of spyware apps. A couple of days ago McAffee

said a spyware app had d/l (nice of it to tell me AFTER it came down

instead of asking me) so I need to get rid of it. Not so great but it

came 'free' with Comcast. Comodo firewall is alot better and I need

to try to get another key to activate my other antiviral. Anyhow...

Please let me know if you know what happened to my display and in the

meantime

And thank-you so much for the return of my mouse.

Have you looked at Start, Control Panel, Display, Settings?

Do you have a Graphics card. I can also adjust the setting through a

Nvidia Control Panel Colour quality setting.

They are missing! No display entry. I changed the wallpaper not

'that' long ago.... which makes me wonder... Will check back with the

app I used. Still, to take out the entire display section?

I wish. The desk.cpl was checked.... I had checked every option to

make sure when I checked the mouse applet. To double check, I undid

the click, hit apply, then reentered, hit apply after which I

rebooted. Still nada. Don't know if this tells you anything but I

have the old style menu only available from the Control Panel on start

menu. The slick new userinterface that offers power options, etc. is

nowhere to be found. Neither is any to make display settings, from

changing wallpaper to color schemes, etc. Hmn, I wonder if something

like a windows pack for changing themes, etc. would help? Still,

display should be there somewhere. Wonder if I should look in the

Windows system folder. I'll check.

Re: Lost Part of Control Panel - Pls Help

TADA...

I get display properties!

Is there anything I can do to get them back into the control panel or

does it not matter.

Don't have a Windows CD. As stated previously, it was installed by a

tech, several years ago, who lives more than a hundred miles away. He

did not leave me with a CD and to be honest. At the time I told him I

felt kind of vulnerable but he brushed me off and said all I'd have to

do was call... he was using his copy and could not let me have one of

my own. I might add that the choice of a tech was not mine. (I know,

long story). I can make another CD but was waiting to unpack some

boxes and locate a large stash of blank CDs. I just got an app that

will allow me to change the serial number on my box so they don't

conflict.

Get the message that .dll files that are necessary for windows to run

TAda!

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

only thing now is when I type the command sfc /scannow, and the system

asks for the CD there is no option to browse. Should there be or is

this as far as I can go until I put the XP iso I have on a disc?

Did this and the system still will not go to the i386 folder....

HOWEVER, , the display finally showed up in the control panel! Now if

I could only find out what that missing chache is about, or, I may

just have to lump it so to speak until I get a new box.

but, you have indeed helped me to restore both the display panel and

mouse! More than I'd hoped for so have a good sleep and thank you for

your time and considerable expertise.

Groan, I did not realize find did not pull up hidden files.

chache? or dllcache? There is supposed to be a dllcache subdirectory

located at: windows\system32\dllcache, but it may be hidden.

Bill, The message I get is as follows.

" I have tried to clean the disc

several times with TuneUp Disc Cleaner. Always get the message: Set

IE Cache info(): IE Cache Category not found and then the cleaner

stops."

Thanks

BTW, are you in CO? I hear it's been mighty hot thereabouts.

Oh, well that sounds different. The IE cache is NOT the dllcache.

I wonder if its referring to the Temporary Internet Folders (TIF) cache; not

sure, but that is the IE cache, used for web page caching.

I forgot - did you ever try a System Restore, back to a previous restore

point? That *may* be at least one way out of this mess, if no one else

has a solution.

It's often been pretty hot, typically around 90 F. Not sure where you

are, but it's been pretty hot all over the USA, from what I've heard. But

at least it's a dry heat over here.

Yes, but I do wish I knew what is wrong with it. Could I just make a

folder and fix it.... and then, if it's a small problelm, why bother.

So on that one just overlooks

The person who ran the computer for the three years I did not never

did a backup. Glump

I'm in MA and it has been very temperate this year. Also the amount

of rainfall is probably closer to a norm than many other areas of the

country. There have been a couple of exceptions however. One being

that we got, depending on what small geographic locale one was in, the

first significantly sized hail I can recall, or my father, and he is

85. Kansas, yes, but here? We also had a tornado in the immediate

area last week, first I can recall around here in a very long time in

addition to which one plowed thru 9 towns in NH... NE style, did quite

a lot of damage. Kind of scary because these are decided changes.

Stay cool,

Molly

PS - we heard it was well over 100 in parts of CO

Well, System Restore creates restore points automatically, so I was

wondering if one was in there that predated all this that might still be

useful, but I guess not. I mean, many of these restore points are

automatically ysaved on the hard drive, but maybe it's been too long now.

You could easily tell by running System Restore, and seeing what its

calendar shows you is still available for restoring.

Yeah, I didn't think MA got hail (or tornadoes) either! But some parts

of Kansas, Texas, OK, and CO, etc, sure.

I heard about that one in NH. I was a bit surprised to hear that, too.

It can get to 100F (and sometimes over), especially away from the mountains,

like in the eastern part of the state. But it's a DRY heat, unlike back

east. It feels like you're standing near an oven. :-) But w/o the

humidity, it's more tolerable.

But then again, I sometimes miss some humidity like back East, but ONLY when

the temps are 80F, or below! (I grew up in NY state, but lived back East

for quite awhile too, and I do miss the LUSH GREENERY back there - also

thinking of Maine!)

Hope you get to Maine soon. Did do the calendar thing in system

restore. It only showed the day from the day before.

Heh, Maine sounds good to me too. When I was a kid, there was still

country one could head out to here. No more, where there were

farmlands there are now 4-5 K sq feet McMansions sprouting like weeds,

only doing more destruction to the environment.

Oh give me a home where the wild pigs (well, really domesticated)

still roam and I'll show you cows by the .... sounds hokey but we

really did have pigs and cows running long side the school bus.

Hugs,

Molly

I would like to, but the expense and hassle in flying these days is making

it difficult.

Most unfortunate. :-(

Well, maybe you still can, in Western and Northern Maine, waaay away from

the high growth and tourist areas. I mean, some of it still looks pretty

rural over there. Can't say that about Portland and a lot of the coastal

areas, however!

And ditto on Cape Cod. Sigh. When I was a kid, I think Cape Cod was at

least "navigable", and nowhere near as crowded as it is now! Ugh. :-(

That does sound nice. :-)
