cb_ipsw911 Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I have a Samsung TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203D with F/W SB01 installed. I recently reinstalled Xp onto my PC but my DVD drive will not recognize DVD's, although it does recognize CD's. I have reinstalled F/W SB00, no effect and then reinstalled SB01, still no change, any help would be appreciated. Quote
KenB Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Hi, and welcome to ExTS DVD drives have 2 lasers. One for CDs and the other for DVDs. It could be that the DVD one is problematic. I assume that all was well before the re-install of XP ? Try this: Start > Run ....type in ......devmgmt.msc ......ENTER Click the + next to DVD CDROM Right Click on the device > uninstall Reboot. Windows will detect new hardware and re-install the drivers ============= If this fails: take a look here: (Delete Upper and Lower Filters) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 Try the FixIt button to download an auto-fix. You can edit the Registry manually - scroll down to the XP option. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! cb_ipsw911 Posted November 4, 2011 Author Posted November 4, 2011 Thanks but still not working. Quote
KenB Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 If re-installing the drivers and removing the upper and lower filters hasn't fixed it then I would suggest that there is a problem with the laser that is linked to the DVD side of the drive. The drives are relatively cheap and easily fitted. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! cb_ipsw911 Posted November 5, 2011 Author Posted November 5, 2011 I retried to do the registry fix by deleting the lower filter (no upper filter), no still nothings changed. If i need to get a new drive do you suggest any model, not blu-ray, but must be dual layer. up to about 30quid. Quote
KenB Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 Hi again, Your DVD Drive could have IDE or SATA connections. Obviously you need to buy the correct one. Open the case and take a look. IDE are broad grey cables and SATA are narrow cables ( only a few wires ). There is another option: You can get external drives. There are advantages to this. Portable. If you replace the computer you still have a spare DVD Drive when you buy the new one. Disadvantage: Carrying around it is possible to damage the lasers through jolting - although they should have this fact built into the design. Just a thought. Let me know if it is SATA or IDE. KenB Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 You have a fair choice here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=sata+dvd+rw&tag=googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=6748400216&ref=pd_sl_309dhrp4vu_b If you are doing a lot of burning you may wish to look at the technical data with reference to the read / write speeds. I also look for reviews. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test

KenB Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I recently reinstalled Xp onto my PC but my DVD drive will not recognize DVD's, although it does recognize CD's. This implies that it did BEFORE you re-installed XP. For the benefit of other readers: XP does not have inbuilt software to read / burn DVDs. ( Vista and Win7 do ) You need to install something like Ashampoo Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
