Guest Jonathan Pray Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 I have a PC running XP Pro SP2 that is only used to record video from security cameras. This box is a replacement for an older system that died due to hardware failure, and is only a few months old. I loaded a clean copy of XP Pro SP2 when I got it to get rid of all the extra apps that came on it. On several occasions, I found the box completely shutdown and powered off. Checking the event logs, 5 of the 7 shutdowns all happened at the EXACT same time...12:00:04 AM on 6/25/08, 7/2/08, 7/10/08, 7/23/08, and 7/30/08. The other 2 failed (6/16/08 and 7/31/08). I pasted the log entry from one of them below. There aren't any events for automatic updates, or anything else to explain why it was shutdown. All of the events show that they were initiated by the winlogon.exe and the user was NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM, not the user; and none of the entries have any further information in them. I installed Sandra to monitor the box temps and any other hardware issues, but all temps are good and no hardware issues have been found. The only things running on this box is the camera software, AVG Antivirus, and the recently installed monitoring software, Sandra. Auto Updates are set to notify only, so it isn't following a system update. AVG is set to update every day at 02:00 AM and to scan around 05:00 AM. I am at a complete loss as to what could be causing this, or how I can get any more information about it. Please let me know if I am overlooking something, or if there is something I can do to log more details when it happens next. When the box is down, so are all the security cameras; so it is pretty important. Thanks in advance, Jonathan Pray Event Type: Information Event Source: USER32 Event Category: None Event ID: 1074 Date: 7/30/2008 Time: 12:00:04 AM User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer: CAMERA Description: The process winlogon.exe has initiated the restart of CAMERA for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found Minor Reason: 0xff Shutdown Type: shutdown Comment: 1 For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Guest V Green Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 Re: PC Randomly Being Shutting Down By System... On some of the video capture cards that the cameras are hooked to, I have seen hardware "watchdog" timers that restart the card and/or the entire system if it detects that the cap card has "stopped responding". This tends to apply to cards that have multiple camera inputs and are designed for security purposes - you usually don't see this on "consumer" vidcap cards. What's the hdwe. setup for the cameras? Could this be applicable or is it just a W.A.G.? The Event seems to suggest maybe this is what's going on. Ask the mgfr. of the cap card.
