Guest Graham Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 My wifes computer has a serious problem! This developed the other day when the computer froze and she went to reboot. Computer is generic model with Asus A7A266 Socket A motherboard. It has a single 512MB DDR DIMM for memory. What happens, is that it goes through the boot process, the Windows XP splash screen appears but then we get a blue STOP screen that says: STOP C0000221 {bad image checksum } The image CRYPTUI.DLL is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computer checksum. The computer then reboots in an endless loop. I have tried using F8 to start up in safe mode, but this does not work - it fails at same point. None of the options on the F8 manu achieve anything. I checked the BIOS and it reports that 512MB of memory are there. Not sure if it tests the memory. XP is on an Ugrade CD. The comuter belonged to a relative, and we don't have a boot disk. I do have boot floppies (probably W98SE) and a W2K Pro boot CD, but have not tried any of these. Also have my original windows version on floppy - Windows for Workgroups - Upgraded many times since then! Question: How do I get access to the hard drive and try and fix this problem! Thanks Graham
Guest sgopus Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 RE: HELP! XP STOP error ! if you had the install cd you could perform a repair install, however since you appear to be lacking in repair skills, I suggest you take it to a reputable repair shop and have them fix it. don't make it worse by trying to do things you don't have the skills to do. Persoanl skills at least. No useful information provided and without knowing my background insults me. Hopefully I will receive a response from someone who CAN help with this problem. If you look this up here http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm, you get: 0xC0000221: STATUS_IMAGE_CHECKSUM_MISMATCH Indicates driver problems, system file problems, disk corruption problems (such as a damaged pagefile), or faulty memory hardware. If you changed nothing - such as installing drivers - I suspect hardware failure. The BIOS has no ability to check memory. I would start the hardware diagnostics with the hard drive, then the memory. If this is an elderly machine (as I suspect it is), the motherboard could have died also. Nothing lasts forever. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot While I don't think boot disks will help you in this situation since software solutions won't help with hardware problems, a boot disk isn't needed. The XP CD is bootable and even though it is an upgrade version can do repairs. During a clean install onto a bare metal drive an XP upgrade version will require you to put in qualifying media (Win9x/ME install disk). But as I said, I doubt that is germane in your case. Malke Thanks for the useful reply. When I first tried to boot from upgrade CD, it said something like No emulation, but after a few tries and hitting "any button" a little sooner, it did boot and went to Setup similar to what I have used on W2K. So, now I am in recovery console and have got to C:/windows. Now, do I have to manually extract CRYPTUI.DLL ? I realise that we may have a hardware problem, but I suppose there is no harm in attempting the software fix first? Graham

If you want to extract that .dll and copy it to Windows/System32 on the hard drive, go for it. If it fixes your issue, great. Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! I also removed the RAM and made sure contacts were clean. Unfortunately, I don't have a replacement to try (it's just a single and a different type from my own machine). I will download and try the memory test from a floppy. Thanks for you help. In the end, if it IS a hardware problem, all I may want to do, is transfer my wife's data (just a few files that she did not back up) to another computer. But, if I can get whole machine running, I could transfer more easily to an external USB drive which she could then access from our laptop. Graham

I inspected the MB, and found a dark spot on an unused memory slot that looked like it might have been burned - arcing? I cleaned it up. I also cleaned the DIMM contacts and re-installed. Ran test again for long time and no errors! Tried extracting the .dll win said might be corrupt but no change - still stops at same point with blue screen. Did a repair/install of XP. A few errors came up during install, but I do now have computer up and running. I have at least one issue where I get a message saying I need to re-install status.msi but it can't find the installation package. Used Ctrl/Alt/Del to get rid of popup, but presume this will come back again. Read somewhere that this might be to do with HP printer. Will try re-installing software. Also have DL Windoes Installer Cleanup - maybe that will help? During the repair/installation of XP several items produced errors and were bypassed. If these are needed, will XP alert me or should I run something like SFC to ensure everything is there? Plan is to first backup drive and maybe find another MB or barebones box. (Lost confidence in this MB). Graham
