Does Indexing Service do any good

I don't want to sound like a basher but I just can't imagine it does any

good. Any time I search explorer still crawls though the disk one folder at

a time. But I am still a little afraid ot kill it so I'm asking if it ever

does anything good.

My desire to kill it comes from my belief that it is one of the reasons

(clearly not the only) XP sometimes goes so S_L_O_W. Task manager at those

times shows usage at 100% and explorer at 95% to 99%.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Chas

It's worthless. You can disable it.

RE: Does Indexing Service do any good

Did some tests a while back with XP clients and an NT4 server. The issue was

that the server had a very large file-collection, and opening Explorer

windows onto this took too long. Findings were that the client Indexing

service was of no help at all, it just caused additional overhead on the

client processors but for no advantage. Upgrading the server hardware and OS

solved the issue. Not sure if the OS or hardware upgrade made the key

difference, as the two went-in together.

A quick test of running the Indexing service on the new server itself again

suggested no real advantage but a waste of processor time, so it was turned

off.

I will instead answer that I never use the Windows search tools; they just

aren't fast enough for me. Instead, I use the excellent, free Agent

Ransack. It's fast and does not require indexing.

Here is the single use for it in my experience: I use WordPerfect 9.

If I want to insert a .jpg graphic in a document while not using

indexing service, an error message pops up [use of this format is not

supported]. If I turn on indexing service it automatically converts

and inserts the .jpg file.

Out of curiosity, have you already applied Service Pack 1, 2, or 3 and

any other related updates to WP9?

It has always done this way. I found it by accident. Yes, SP1, SP2,

SP3 and All updates to WP9. By messing around with it, I found that

it is only necessary to have indexing service on the directory

(folder) containing the .jpg files. Weird.

Yes, that is odd to have to have it only on the directory where

there's jpg files. It almost sounds like WP9 has a proprietary

component in it or something. Sorry I couldn't help more.
