installing updates

The OS is XP Pro.

I just had to do a total recovery to as delivered conditions. As part of the

process I went to the MS website and downloaded and installed SP3.

Now when I start to shut down I get the message "installing updates". It

reports 13 updates to be installed. As soon as the update process starts

and before anything actually gets installed the PC shuts down.

This happens every time.

Are these new updates beyond SP3?

If they are why does the install fail?

If they are redundant to what SP3 has already done, how do I remove them?

There *are* updates that have been released since SP3 was released.

I think I have about a dozen, so your 13 sounds about right.

How are your updates setting set? If you have it set to auto download

and update, then you're doing it in the background as you shutdown.

Turn it to manual if you want to schedule it when you're not going to be

shutting down.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft

Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP

installation or you repair a Windows XP installation

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to Upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

NB: Several critical updates were released AFTER WinXP SP3 was released in

early May-08.
