Guest Emily Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 Hi, I want to get rid of an old laptop, and ordinarily I would run the system disk to make sure all my deleted files are gone and can't be retrieved. Unfortunately, I can't find my system disk. Any suggestions? I'm looking for the quickest possible solution. :-) Thanks!

Download Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN), put it on a floppy or CD, boot it on the computer in question, let the program run (perhaps overnight if your disk drive is large), and then confirm that it has completed its work. After that you can get rid of the computer with confidence that nobody will be reading your files. http://www.dban.org/ John McGaw http://johnmcgaw.com

The OP may want to give it to someone else or donate it to some organization, in working order.
