unsuccessful attempts to repair XP Pro

I had a cpu failure and replaced the both MB and CPU, with newer items. I

had no opportunity to load the new MB and its appurtenant drivers.

After assembling the MB, CPU and attaching the hard drive, I booted up and

was taken to the page with the option of safe mode, last successful load, and

t

he other two options. Even with safe mode, the computer simply rebooted.

I attempting to repair the OS program following the procedure outlined on

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm

the computer has an endless loop of rebooting at the conclusion of part 3 and

before part 4 (when it is copys files and does a reboot on its own). The

loop of restarting and beginning to load Windows XP likely will continue

indefinately although I intercede after 5 reboots.

When I intercede and start the process all over again, I get the error

message the "Setup has already attempted to upgrade the following Windows

c:\\Windows Microsoft Windows XP Pro

It continues with "setup will try again".

Will a completely new XP instal interfere with running the new, and if so,

how do I delete the corrupted, unrepairable one?

Do I have any choice but to do a new install? My XP is an retail upgrade

version. Wouldn't I likely have the same problem if I tried loading a Vista

upgrade?

See this article I recently posted to my web site,

which deals with a Repair Install in a situation similar to yours.
