Hi - when I turn on my Dell 4300 (yes it's that old) it says "strike F1 for reboot or F2 for setup utility". There is also a clicking noise beforehand from inside the case. It hasn't done ths before!

Please help as all of my music is stored on the hard drive!!

Thanks.

Hello and welcome..This dont sound good...

I agree this is a very old computer and if you have never replaced the hard drive in the time you have had it I would assume it is a smaller gig and is proberly full..Over full...

The clicking could be your hard drive....

When you turn your computer on is your hard drive listed?

Can you enter BIOS and again is your hard drive listed?

Hi,

As J-B says ........it doesn't look good.

If the clicking is coming from the hard drive then, basically, it has died.

See here:

oes it sound like this?

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hi,

The only thing that I see when I turn the computer on is the message about F1 and F2: I get the BIOS option.

Thanks.

Hi,

Yes it does sadly. That's not very reassuring at all is it?! I have all of my music on a second internal hard drive that was installed a couple of years ago so I could remove it I guess. Is there any way of recovering data from the duuf original hard drive?

The link mentioned 2 possibilities to try - I don't advise bashing the drive ........yet :)

The freezing method is worth a try.

I have seen some instances when this has worked and data was able to be retreived from the drive.

It certainly will not make matters worse.

If you want to give it a go ....

Take the drive out.

Wrap the drive tightly in cling-film.

Put the drive in a sealable plastic food bag ( the type that you use for freezer food ).

Partly seal and squeeze the air out > then finally seal the bag.

Put in the freezer (not refrigerator) overnight then back into the system.

Try booting.

If you are lucky it will boot.

If it does - transfer your data quickly - it may not last long :)

EDIT:

Just read J-Bs post below - before you take the drive out try this and let us know if you can access the BIOS.

Do you see on the screen "Press Del to enter setup"?

Press Del button on startup, this should then enter BIOS...

Hi - I don't see "Press Del to enter setup". All I get is the "Strike F1 or F2" etc.
